Title: Sony To Block Sales Of Used Games
Post by: twistedsymphony on May 24, 2006, 12:57:00 PM
From Next Generation

QUOTE
According to a UK news source, citing retail contacts, Sony is preparing to make it illegal for consumers to sell used PS3 games. The plan would involve Sony adopting a licensing system whereby gamers would agree that they are purchasing a license to play a game, rather than the game itself.

If true, such a move would be a massive boost for publishers and developers which do not profit from the lucrative and damaging retail trade in used games. In fact, many publishers are furious that they have to spend support money on consumers who have not actually contributed a dime to the company's coffers.

In turn, it would be a catastrophe for retailers, which make a significant proportion of margin from used games. Consumers would likely be less than overjoyed.

well the rumor before had to do with a technology that would imprint a blue ray disk to that player and stop it from playing on other players.

this is different and IMO worse.  basically sony is saying that you are paying for "permission" to play games and no more, we dont own the games, we are just paying for a right that should have been paid when we buy the systems.

while i can see how publishers and developers would like this move, how much will it benefit them if this kind of action effects system sales?  even with used-sales allowed, its a safe bet to assume that the 360 will sell as many copies as the ps3 if not more of multiplatform titles.

Wow. And if anybody has the balls to go out and so something this crazy, it's Sony. I think they will push like crazy for this because the amount of money this will need to recoup from the hardware cost. This generation of playstation gamers should be prepared to shell out tons of cash.

you obviously underestimate the stupidity and devotion of the zombies out there.  while it seems that every time sony unveils something new, it will be a close race, i wouldnt announce who has won just yet.

if you have no ownership of the content of the disc, then i imagine you also have no legal argument for backing up your disc; because it is not your disc...

Oh Sony... You are really digging yourself a big hole if all this stuff is really true, now aren't you?
The average consumer is NOT going to be happy with this... neither are hardcore gamers but hardcores can afford to feed their addiction with new games.  The average gamer can't, especially after buying a $500 (hopefully the $600 though) console.

actualy i think this could strengthen the pro-backup argument, since you are paying for the right to play it, not the media itself (although it may also mean that sony may have to repalce any broken or scratched discs)

im sure they will word their liscense agreement to screw every loophole though

I guess I can see Sony's point on this issue. Lets look at the life of one game disc. Lets say its for a new release bought on launch day. The original owner plays it for a month then brings it to a Video game dealer and sells it, which the dealer in turn re-sells it. Now that one game could end up being re-sold 50 times within a couple of years. Multiply that by a couple of thousand of the same game re-sold over and over again in various shops around the world and that will certainly add up and could cost the publishers millions in potentials sales.

Re-selling used video games is almost like renting, except re-sellers don't have to pay volume licensing fees I'm sure a rental company has to pay.

we all see why sony would do it, but the real question, as a consumer and gamer, is SHOULD they do it?  of course the general answer is no.  I think the main push behind a plan like this is to recoup money lost from console sales.  MS isnt losing nearly as much as sony is with each console.  also sony hasnt had the best (putting this lightly) track record with software ratios.  going the conventional route wouldnt be a bad idea, it would just be harder for sony to break even.  one thing that is becoming very obvious (and many of us knew it long ago) is that sony can give a rat's ass about the consumer, they only care about what is best for their pockets.  that in the end, along with their BS, could spell trouble for sony.  hell look at all of the bad press/reports that the company is getting just from E3.  If their launch is half of the debacle that we expect, then they will have a long hill to climb before they are in the green again.

look at the 360 and the 3 biggest hits of this year (FNR3, oblivion, and GRAW), ubisoft credited the 360 as having one of the best 1st quarter earnings in a long time because of GRAW.  oblivion sold 1.5 million copies on the 360 alone, that is a lot of copies for a 3rd party game this early in a console's life cycle.  IMHO, this move sony may make would give developers more reason to put out crap.  at least with the 360 it has been proven that if you produce quality you will get the sales you deserve and rightly so.  Also like i stated earlier, i will bet anyone that the 360 sells as many (if not more) copies of any multi-platform 3rd party title as sony with their ps3 and their nazi policies.

I agree.. and that's actually the first thing that came to mind...

If you own the rights to the content then you should have free license to use that content in whatever form you want.... further if your disc is destroyed they should provide you with a fresh disc to you can continue to use the content you purchased.

Good point but sony won't do that. Trust me!

So after a pay WAY TOO MUCH for these blu ray games they are gonna tell me that I don't own them. I just get the 'priveledge' to play them.

WTF are they thinking? I don't know, maybe they saw the 360's record breaking attach rate and said "we gotta do something to make sure we can match this".  Lets stop ppl from selling used games so no matter what they HAVE to buy new games  laugh.gif

Im just glad i can sell my copy of ff11 for more than its worth. Now if i had a ps3 im stucking with turds like that
