Title: Hard Drive Recovery
Post by: Renegade56 on November 09, 2007, 12:23:00 AM
I had a setup with a 250gb harddrive and xecuter 2.6. It has been on live before but isnt banned. I f'ed up my mobo a couple days ago, so I bought a new one. I got everything up and running and im trying to figure out a way to get all of my data off of my 250gb harddrive as I will be getting a 500gb one anyway for this new xbox.

Can I....

Desolder the EEPROM chip from the old unbanned xbox mobo and resolder it onto the new one so teh drive will be recognized when I plug it in?

or

Can I somehow plug it into my PC to store all of the data on my computer?

I would hate to have to take the time to back up all of my games and movies again.

Thanks.

Hi,

it depends upon the fact if the harddisk is locked or not.

If it is unlocked, you can use xbplorer 360 to read the contents of your xbox harddisk.

If it is locked, you need the information of the xbox eeprom chip, so that you can unlock it.

You can switch the eeprom chip between different xboxes. Since you consider this option, I assume that your harddisk is locked. There are 3 different eeprom content layouts. One for 1.0 xboxes, one for 1.1 - 1.5 xboxes and one for 1.6 and 1.6b xboxes. You can't switch the eeprom from one type to another.

You could build yourself a eeprom reader, and read the eeprom contents of the defective xbox mobo. With this information, you can unlock your harddisk with a pc.

The soldering work involved is easier than removing the chip and resoldering it in another xbox.

regards.

thanks i will look into that.

My dead mobo is a 1.1 and my new one is a 1.1, so I can just take the eeprom chip from the dead mobo to the new one, correct?

Yes, if yo have the ability to desolder and solder it, it'll work. Eepom reader may be easier.

Note that HDDs need to be locked to take consoles on to Live. Usually best to leave them unlocked if you don't intend on doing this (though it's a different story for softmodded boxes).

Some save games won't work if they detect that they're being used with a different EEPROM. I think Team Ninja games are a common example, but it's certainly true for any content you downloaded off Live. Halo 2 for example will tell you on startup that it removed "corrupt" content, and boom! It's gone.

I suspect that EEPROM reader tutorial can be used in reverse (to flash one system's EEPROM with another), effectively swapping them without performing any soldering work on the motherboards themselves. Haven't tried it though, attempting a write could make it catch fire for all I know...

Please note, though, that you can't take the xbox on live anymore if you use the old eeprom, via Marriage Theory.

Essentially once you go online with a virgin eeprom, it gets linked to the HDD you have in the system. If you ever go live without the HDD thats linked to the eeprom (say, after a HDD upgrade), then you'll get banned.

ok I just desoldered the EEPROM from my old mobo into the new one and everything works. Its been awhile since Ive done this, but can I just drag and drop my files to my computer via FTP and just keep them there until the new harddrive is in and then just drag everything over via FTP?
