What's your DVD Drive model? DMS, D2A, D2B, etc? (I'm guessing a D2B)

I've never heard of running a wire.. like that 1st diagram.

I've always read that all you have to do is rebuild the legs from the Wii's DVD Drive's chip.. Then solder your Wiikey like normal.

Not entirely sure though.

Notice in the second picture on that black chip with a billion legs..

How it says "GC2-DMS"..

That's where yours will be.

ahhh...Ok. In that case its a GC2-D2C

well that just sucks....I added this serial to the tracker. So this means this paticular dvd is not mod-able at all? or just with the wiikey?

You'll definitely hear about it on www.nintendo-scene.com.

But.... You'd probably hear about it first at www.wiinewz.com

Uhhh...you do realize that by rebuilding the leg all you're doing is attaching it to a trace (basically a wire) on the pcb...right?  Whether you use the trace provided or your own wire, why would the result be different?

Post by: sicknasty413 on August 24, 2007, 04:12:00 PM
I know that. I was referring to a different wire in the 1st diagram.. indicated by a yellow square/rectangle/instructions/etc. I was pondering why you would need to run a wire from the Wiikey pad directly to the IC when the pad on the DVD drive is available for a normal install.

EDIT-
Looks like the PCB in the 1st diagram is of a D2C.. Because I know my DMS looked different..

that diagram is all funky. Just rebuild the legs and install the wiikey like it always is.

It is a D2C chip. Not gonna work.

Well if he has missing a pad that makes no difference, just use common since an follow the trace. As for the D2C, my bad I didn't pick that up in my scanning of the thread.

i followed the track and the point the wire was supposed to go to on the chip is one off. Try the wire one to the right.

Please elaborate your explanation on your findings about the correct trace to use on the chip...

Are you talking about the wire that is supposed to go to the leg that is 5th from the left of the IC chip?

Correct me if I am wrong, so are you saying it is supposed to go to the leg which is 6th from the left of the IC chip?... that is right next to the missing leg of the D2B IC Chip? Hopefully you reply fast as I am stuck on an install right now. Rebuilt missing legs, quick soldered wiikey as normal, used flux and a little bit of rosin core solder, checked continuity at all points including VCC and Power, all showed up fine.
BUT wont boot my config 1.2b disc or any backups. It does however play originals fine.

Thanks in advance   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

You should install just like the picture shows. If you are running 3.0 system firmware you may need to boot GCOS before running the config disk.

You know if you went looking for help on a dedicated Wii site it'd be a whole lot easier to find:  rolleyes.gif

Got it, did it and it worked.

D2B (cut IC legs) and revisioned board (point 3 is missing).
Decided on going with the 100% wire install.

Can you get any better pictures? You can't really see anything in detail in those pictures.

i have a friend who has an older wii who isnt bothered about modding so im gonna try to swap my d2c drive with his older one. its a shame you dont seem to be able to buy the drives seperately on ebay like you can with xbox. maybe that will happen eventually?

anyone know how accurate that wii tracker is?

I just got some wii's that need modding , but according to the wii tracker all 3 of 'em have the G2C-D2C
drive chip. unmoddable.

that was according to the serial #"s I entered. is there any point in opening 'em up to check the chip?

I don't want to open them if I don't need to.

Tortuga, its quite accurate. it has guessed my wii chip number and two of my friend's correctly. 2000 submissions of serial numbers now, so its certainly the best guess going

just wishful thinking that I had ones that were moddable, I got an email from the re-seller I got the chip from stating that there was a rumour of a hack for the d2C chip.

I'm not putting much faith in that statement , though.

I just got a D2B console to mod. I just wanted to know, you guys that have done it before, when you rebuilt the legs did you have to put in a piece of wire or did you just bridge it with solder?

this looks like its gonna be quite a challenge to rebuild the legs without shorting them out.

any tips or advice?

ok, I've rebuilt the legs and installed the wiikey, its reading the discs (orig and backup) but the wiimotes aren't responding.

Also, whenever I turn the power off, the light stays red instead of going orange.

anyone have any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

sounds as though it may have been put back together wrong or something. maybe a connector left out? Theres a really good disassembly tutorial here:

The problem you are having is a bad VCC / GND pad reference on the first pic.  Shift the wires to the left as a pair moving the wire from the pad marked as VCC to the upper left pad in the photo and move the wire from the pad marked as GND to the pad marked as VCC.  If you look at the chip board it was made to drop directly over the pads and solder in place. When the pic was Photoshoped they marked the wrong pad.
