Title: What Is The Wiikey, And What Does It Really Do?
Post by: BurnDown on July 16, 2007, 02:32:00 AM
Hi there, yes the wiikey does allow you to boot backup wii games. It also allows you boot gamecube backups, and run some homebrew on the wii. However, there are issues with the wiikey and the team seem to have abandoned the project. If you are planning on chipping your wii i would recommend getting the Cyclowiz or the Wiinja. There are also some open source mod chips such as the wiifree, which (as its name suggests) you can make yourself for absolutely free!

As for backing up your wii games, you need a certain dvd drive in your PC, one of the following:
LG-8164b
LG-8163b
LG-8162b
LG-8161b

then you just need to download a freeware program called Raw Dump (google it) and it should backup your disc. Note it may take a couple of hours per disc.

Hope that helps.

You can also use this drive Hitachi LG GDR-H10NBLK (SATA). There is a nice Guide here:

There is a new SD-Card dump that is faster too.

If you use google you should be able to find a guide that suits you. Try searching for "Cyclowiz installation" or something along those lines.

As for taking apart your wii, this is a pretty decent guide that appears on a lot a sites:

You need to make sure that your wii is mod-able, as some of the newer wiis have drive chipsets that are not currently supported by any mod chips. You can get a good idea of the chipset you have by checking your serial number here:

The only way to be 100% certain of your chipset is to physically open your wii and check.

Another chip worth looking at is the WiiD. Looks like it has a lot of features. Also, Team Xecuter are working on the WiiP v2, and we all know that Xecuter make great products so it may be worth waiting for that.
