Title: Sd Gecko As Gc Memory Card

So I bought the SD Gecko assuming it word work in the Wii as just a game cube memory card.  I have tried 3 different cards SanDisk 512, and 2gb, PNY 512.  No matter what I put in the Wii it just says the card can not be used.  Also games say "The Device in slot A/B is not a memory Card".  My SD cards are formatted in fat.  Is it even possible to use the gecko as just a basic memory card?  Or is it only for homebrew?
