Title: Possible To Upgrade The Wiimote Speaker?
Post by: twistedsymphony on December 18, 2006, 10:05:00 AM
Definitely a low quality speaker... the problem is mostly the fact that the speaker is tiny and the volume is cranked WAY up so that you can hear it clearly at arms length.

it's about the same quality as a cheap earbud cranked all the way up.

there doesn't seem to be any sort of static and only a slight (almost unnoticeable) bit of distortion due to the volume level.

There also the fact that the holes in the remote for the sound aren't all that great, so even if you managed to shove a larger, higher quality speaker in there, it would probably get muffled by the controller case.

Putting in a headphone jack may be more logical.

headphone jack? how is that more logical?

the sounds the come out of the remote are the noises that supposedly would come from the device in your hand... the firing/reloading of a gun the connection of a bat and a ball, the swathing of a tennis racket.

wearing headphone would make the location of those noises nonsensical, not to mention severely detract from the 5.1 DPLIIx surround sound. The whole point of the Wii Remote speaker is to further enhance the surround sound, not replace it.

I think it would be interesting to remove the speaker. It would deffinitely be a challenge but would probably be an interesting mod. Now to find some old speakers... and a tri-wing screwdriver dry.gif.

There's certain sounds I've noticed in Zelda, that even after the real sound plays, there's some softer crackling at the end. I think the sound degradation is caused mostly by very heavy compression, rather than a poor speaker. Well, that and the fact that if you accidentally rest your ear on the remote in your hand, once a sound comes from it you'll jump from your chair from the extreme volume that little thing puts out.

Yeah ive noticed that aswell. Its not a bad speaker considering its size and everything.....
