As far as I know, you need a GC controller/Wavebird to play GC games. The classic controller doesn't have analogue triggers with the extra 'click' at the end, for one thing.

When you put in a Gamecube game the Wii controler lights flash and it becomes unresponsive.  You have to plug into the top with a GC controler.
