Title: Wii Modding
Post by: jesusphreak on October 24, 2006, 04:07:00 PM
Mods: Dunno where this belongs; there doesn't appear to be a forum for modding other consoles.

I've been anticipating this since it was announced.

Think of how small that thing is. It is also relatively cheap compared to the other consoles. It supports standards like DVD, USB, and SD cards. It also has wireless LAN built-in as well as very interesting wireless motion technology. All of this combined with hardware that is slightly more powerful than the original Xbox.

All of this adds up to some very interesting modding possibilites. I don't know what all could be done with it, but I could imagine small and cheap laptops put together using all this tech and a few other parts for under $300.

Anyone else interested in modding the Wii? What do you have in mind?

I noticed a relatively small exhaust fan in the back, that could be replaceable with a lit-up one.

I think you could mod it, but why?

Um not meant to be negitive just...
You can get a xbox 360 Off ebay for anyware between 180-250 usa If you look around And to buy insurance Its only like 30-40$ so to get a xbox 360 mod could and should run you about 400$ you pay 100$ more for so much more.
Its worth it.

This is completely the wrong forum...should probably be in the Off-Topic forums under gamecube/ps2/dreamcast/other section.

This hasn't even come out yet. How can you possibly start speculating on its modding capabilities.

Its always good to think ahead. I mean you can plan ahead on its internals but cosmetics are okay.

I am looking on google and there is a pic of "the other controller". It sort of resembles a nes controller. I am sure (depending on thickness) you could ghetto it into a nes or snes controller.

You can probably put AV ports on the back.

The usb ports on the back are different. They should be changed to normal ones.

It should fit good in a dvd player case.

There is a sensor that plugs into the back I guess, internalize it.

The duck hunt gun looks real gay. Change it.

There are just a few I came up with in ten minutes. Put some real thought into and it could be modded right as it comes out.

The Wii and 360 are different in many ways. One is smaller, one is more powerful. They both use different technology. It really isn't an issue of money or of power, I just think the Wii would be interested to mod.

its not released so if we're gunna do speculation...

hows about modding it to rip graphically improved/bug fixed dumps of classic games (through virtual console)?

also, theyve killed off DVD playback. its unlikely, cos im sure it would need a hardware decoder, but, modding it for dvd playback?

just thoughts wink.gif

Why is this forum always got someone just wanting to disgree with someone. You can easily specualte on its modding capabilities. Cause we are  rolleyes.gif

Seeing as it looks pretty sexy anyway, theres not a lot paint wise to do. I wouldn't want to ruin that lush finish. Maybe just a window? But who knows what kind of room there is inside it and if there is any point in a window. Judging by the GC there won't be a lot of room inside.

I highly doubt the need for cooling mods either.

component cables will be available at launch, and I would expect most games to support 480p at least, so it shouldnt look TOO bad on your lcd

Yeah considering there is little to no difference between 480i and 480p I'm sure Nintendo will require 480p support across the board if for no other reason but to keep themselves from being TOO far behind the the resolution departement compaired to Sony and MS.

Considering most Gamecube games supported 480p and if you had a modchip you could set it to bump up the resolution of the few games that didn't.

I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surpirsed by the Wii's graphical capabilities not having to support HD they'll be able to levere the power they DO have to be quite competitive at the 480p level... meaning if you don't own an HDTV you might not be able to tell the difference between 360, PS3 and Wii games.

BTW if you guys would like a dedicated Wii forum (or a dedicated DS forum for that matter) please post here: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=557531

Would be cool if Gamecube homebrew just booted.  That would be quite the gift from Nintendo, not like they would have much to lose if it just worked, and the buzz would get even more people to buy it.

It would be ideal if wii can be hacked.  The problem with these 7th generation consoles is that they require frequent updates from the internet.  If someone can find an exploit that allows you to play a backup game, they can quickly release an update that prevents you from doing it.  I just hope that I am wrong about this.

You guys are missing the obvious mod... and I call it!

It looks like a Revolution would fit right inside the classic N.E.S. If not, that'd be the first mod that comes to mind tongue.gif

But I'd love to see the system be put along side or in other hardware. You might even be able to fit it in a TiVo or something crazy like that.

Anyone know the specs on the Wii's power supply? And other things that relate to power.

Because since the thing is soo small, I really wanna throw a rechargeable battery into my backpack..throw the wii in there..and throw a monitor in there..and game during school...or anywhere for that matter.

I know the gamecube had a battery and portable screen...

It would be sooooo awesome.
