The only other explanation is that this so-called security update has been designed to prey on the gullible and uninformed. Surely not!
By the way – the website warns people outside Japan not to apply it and to wait for regional versions to emerge. So far there's no sign of it on the American PSP system update page.
Still, if you own a Japanese PSP and want to apply 2.01, you can do so on the Sony Japan website. Doing so renders you slightly less naughty than you were before, but you're still going to hell for buying a Japanese PSP in the first place. That said, you're not the only ones.

The SXT Version Changer 2.1 "emulates firmware 2.01 on a 1.5," so this shouldn't cause a problem with any games anyone wants to play.
I think what we should worry about is a system imbedded into the game itself. Sony has to know that people are changing their firmware version number without changing the firmware. It seems like only a matter of time before they try to trick us and upgrade the firmware when we launch the game.

I'm getting a PSP at the end of this week and expect it to be either 1.51,1.52, or 2.00. If it's one of the first two, I'll need to upgrade to 2.00 before downgrading to 1.50 in order to run homebrew.
If 2.00 is unavailable, I'll be in a bit of a pickle.
