Title: Xbox 1.6 Won't Power On
Post by: EuGoR on May 20, 2007, 01:34:00 AM
I have a xbox 1.6 and it won't power on.  I checked the PSU and its seems to be good.  I checked its fuses and what not even the transistor on the motherboard.  When I put a volt meter on the power connector that attaches to the mobo I get standby power but only .5v on the yellow and nothing on the red.  The oranges I get the 5.0v or whatever it is.  I get 3.3v on the power switch.  I also get the correct voltages on the lpc.  I am at a loss I have looked everywhere to find the problem with no luck.  If its a broken part I'm fine with repairing it or ordering a new one but I just have no clue what could be wrong.  Does anybody know what could possibly be the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

check the connector of the power supply that goes to the mobo. One of the wires is the PWR ON signal. A 1.6 xbox should have 0V on that line in standby, and 5V when the power is on. You should at least see that 5V come up for a couple of seconds when you press the power or eject button. The circuit is controlled by the PIC microcontroller in the xbox that operates on the standby voltage. If you get the 5V on the PWR ON, and the other voltages don't come up, your power supply is defective. If you don't get the 5V, you should check your mobo and the small pcb with the power and eject button.

Well I get all the correct voltages on standby and with power on.  I have to hold the power button on to get readings.  What do I look for on the switch to troubleshoot further?

i had the same problem once and had to replace a transistor located near the video encoder chip, unfortunetly i can't find the website someone linked me to detailing how to fix it but hopefully someone else here can. i am willing to replace the transistor myself for a fee, or i can just sell you a transistor i have left over from my previous repair. if i find the link i'll edit this reply

I created a tutorial a while back on how to replace the blown transistor on a v1.6 XBOX, you can find it here:

just incase the topic starter still hasnt fixed his xbox, this link talks about replacing the same resistor i had problems with, if you are unable to fix this yourself I would be willing to install one of my own resistors left over  for 50 dollars. This is the same I charge for a standard modification even though this is alot more work. You can (or anyone else with this same problem) can message me on AIM at "modman860" if you want to send your xbox to me for repairs. I have plenty of references as well.
