Any Good pad that you might build will cost you around 200 bones anyway.  So unless you are in it for the kicks (no pun intended)...

You can get a crappy pad for 20 bucks... I have one and it works, but it slides all over the place.

There are semi rigid ones that are two adn three times that amount but work a bit better.

You could get an adaptor that lets you use the ddr pad on the xbox.
