Wrong forums. But either way here is the solution. Use Xbox HDM. here is the guide. 40 GB will work great as long as it's IDE and is lockable (if using a softmod).

You will need to format the F partition for the extra space.

If your modchip supports an upgrade feature for HDD you will need to connect the two HDD to the IDE cable and you will need on molex split connector to power the second HDD.

When I upgraded to a different HD, I just dumped all the files from the stock one to my PC, and then FTP them to the new one.
