I just got a ps2 slim yesterday for free because I was told it had a broken fan. The fan wires had just been pulled of the solder pads so easy fix. However once I was done that I booted it up to try it out. Everything was working perfectly except the console would not respond to any input from the controller on either port whether in the system menu or in game. The controller is receiving power because the analog light will light up when the analog button is pressed. Also I know the controller works cause it's fine on my ps1.
any ideas?

check the controller port connection. If there is rust or dust and blow it out with compressed air.
then if above fails, try checking the fuses.
The port on a slim should have a fuse. If you were to look for a blown fuse. They usually are signified by PS"number". The "number" is a number. Just use a continuity meter to see if there is a beep. If not then that's blown.
The ps2 rarely has controller port problems. I only had two or three in my days of modding ps2. I've done over 350+ over the years. The controller port were from the fat ps2 too. They can be replaced. But on a slim they can't be replaced. I doubt that sony would mess up on a simple controller port for the slims. The slims are their final design. They must of had it down pat by like the 23+ revisions. hehe.

turns out it was dirty controller ports. Compressed air didn't work, however after cleaning the ports with rubbing alcohol worked.
Thanks for the advice.
