How can i format a xbox hard drive for pc use?

You need to unlock the drive, you can do this a number of ways, a quick search round the tutorials should show you how, if the xbox is modded that its coming out of then you can unlock from the Evox dash, otherwise Xboxhdm will do the job from your PC

Strangely, I found this to be tough at times.  My feeling is that you must first unlock the drive (of course).  Then make sure you use a good partition program (fdisk is my partitioner of choice) to delete all the partitions on the drive.  Add a new primary partition and format it.

I just use configmagic and unlock it. Then put it in the pc and go to disc management and it picks it up automatically, create a partition and format it.

works everytime no probs...

use atapwd.exe and use the suitable master password for your hdd
