Title: Removing Heatsinks On Crystal(1.4?) Xbox's
Post by: Cam_86 on January 22, 2007, 02:20:00 AM
Kay, i'm trying to mod my Xbox for xbox media centre and to play back up games. Thing is, i want it to run really quietly, and as cool as possible.

I read some tutorials that said swapping the main fan, and re-setting the heatsinks with proper thermal paste will knock off 3-5C. Thing is, i cant seem to get my heatsinks off. The retention clips are yellow plastic, and they dont really flex much. Both the CPU and GPU are using passive heatsinks, so if there WAS a way to get under them without snapping the clips i get the feeling i could really make a noticable difference. Think its worth my time? The fan i'm adding will be a 80mm Vantec stealth, so i guess at the very least it'll run 'somewhat' cooler, and MUCH quieter.

hmmm, good idea applying some descent thermal paste,

but about placing different fan:
I wouldn't put strain myself for that, cause you can set XBMC to keep your temperature under a specified value, that way your fan won't run that fast all the time, mine goes really silent in XBMC like that (I only use it for videos, playing games will cause more heat...) (I've also noticed that my Crystal Xbox is louder than the black Xboxes I've seen...)

take care!
