Title: Highway Bill Becomes Law
Post by: bluedeath on August 10, 2005, 08:44:00 PM
QUOTE
Alaska, the third-least populated state, for instance, got the fourth most money for special projects -- $941 million -- thanks largely to the work of its lone representative, House Transportation Committee Chairman Don Young. That included $231 million for a bridge near Anchorage to be named "Don Young's Way" in honor of the Republican.

Do they realize that just because we can print money at the drop of a hat does not mean we should.

well we have actually been neglecting our roads for a long time now... americans have a horribly nasty habit of ONLY thinking of the short term... that being said, this is a perfect example of a short term solution to a problem that was originally addressed as a short term problem...

people are fucking stupid...

Compared to the money that the Federal government gives out for Education here, this is crazy.  With the availability of oil decreasing, we should spend more money building a national railway system across the US instead like in most of the European and Asian countries instead of a Highway system which is going to be useless anyways.

Despite public opinion polls that, in Los Angeles for instance, showed 88 percent of the public favoring expansion of the rail lines after World War II, NCL systematically closed its streetcar systems down until, by 1955, only a few remained.

A federal antitrust investigation resulted in both indictment and conspiracy convictions for GM executives, but destroying a public transportation network that would cost hundreds of billions of dollars to reproduce today cost the company only $5,000 in fines.

We can't fight big oil.  I truly believe that the system has to break before we can fix it.

About a year ago I was talking about The End of Suburbia and I hear a bunch of naysayers saying that there's plenty of oil available.  Remember that the next time you fill up your gas tank.

i knew someone would say that... and its about $6.35 a gallon... but at least they've got a decent rail/bus system... as well as an above adequate schooling/health system... way more than you can say about the us... and yes i know theyre taxed to a greater degree, but at least it goes to tangible, beneficial things...

The quality of a Counrties transportation infrastructure is abolutley essential to their devlopement. A key factor to any Countries contiued growth and developement is the provisioning of a stable and modern road/rail system and this bill will certainly help provide our Corportaions and work force with the tool necessary to keep our free enterprise at the Worlds helm.

Hmm, this is interesting.  We are facing a new Depression, and someone actually suggested a massive public works project, even though there wasnt enough money to pay for it.  Who in the world would suggest a massive, expensive, public works project in a time of economic decline. Psssh

Actually, some scientists currently think that petroleum may be abiotic.  You can create petroleum from certain minerals if its under high pressure and is heated.  The theory is that this is how oil is created.  The fact that we find organic molecules in the oil is contributed to organisms similiar to those found in cold vents in the gulf of mexico.  IF this is true, it would imply that oil probably exists on other planets, and that if we dig deeper we should find a lot more oil.
