Title: Older Bands That Today's Youth Needs To Hear
Post by: The unProfessional on July 21, 2004, 04:52:00 PM
Okay, curious to see what people think.  What are some great, older bands that today's saliva and bizkit fans REALLY NEED to hear...

I'm going to start by throwing:

Rush
Van Halen

into the mix.  <

I like both those suggestions but why exactly do they need to listen to them?  <

to add some flavor into music.

i am seventeen years old.  i have been playing drums since i  was ten years old. i have been in various shitty garage bands since i was 12, and everytime i play with new bands, i introduce rush.  in result, we bring new input into our music making a deep impression, and helping us sound alittle bit different and fresher from every other shitty garage band out there...

without bands like rush, for me at least, drumming would suck.  neilpeart and getty lee and alex leifson have taught me  its ok to experiment with diferent time signatures (variosu tracks.. e.g. Tom Sawyer, Anthem 1975) , to incorperate jazz into rock (la villa strangiatto), and that its ok to sound different, and always trust yourself.

i mean what can you compare RUSH to.  what song have u ever heard that sounds like Tom Sawyer. or like Limelight. or like Freewill. Dont get me started with their amazing rock operas.  2112 is something i cannot comprehend.

that saddest thing now adays from east-cost ny/nj scene, kids these days listen to bands like Coohede and Cambria and say "wow these guys have a new sound. theire punk with their own style. wow. this is the new emo" when really most of coheede and cambria, while they are great guys, and amazing musicians, owe almost all ther songs to RUSH.  there are songs of theirs which sound just like ruch songs.  i cry everytime i see a kid dressed in blakc emo shit with those coheede shirts on, i feel like slapping them in the face and saying "you mean Rush you stupid fuck."

oh well, let me add to that list:

Sublime - sublime's style sets them apart fro mevery other band ever.  Reggae mixed in a blender with jazz, rock and grunge ot produce a brad nowell masterpiece.  A MUST for everyone. Trust me just buy the cd "40 oz to freedom"

CKY - great post-90s rock and roll revival band.  alittle hard edged sometimes, but these guys are creating some new and very impactful music.  trust me, one day deron miller, jess margera, and chad ginsburg will get the respect CKY diserves.

Steve Miller Band - what a goddamn genious.... enough said.

311 - some great drumming, great vocals, and some good rock/reggae trax.

The Who - Peter Towshend is the best musical writer their will ever be. even if he downloads child pornography...

Dispatch - just check em out b 4 u judge em. there really goood. and they are great musicians, something that music today lacks.

i grew up listening to those bands and other classic rock bands. id like to throw in:       the cars
zz top
talking heads

but why exactly would u pick out saliva and limp bizkit? saliva is fading away and bizkit is also fading away due to the departing of that guitarist (name escapes me)                        <

I mentioned saliva and limp bizkit as two arbitrary, but very different, examples of formulated noise.  Noise being the key word.  Much of today's youth simply hasn't heard bands like The Who or Rush, because it isn't on the radio or MTV.  The musical talent hasn't been touched in years, and I think it's healthy for any music enthusiast to listen to what music is all about.  It's not about popularity or having the new CD.  It's about appreciating the art and the effect it has on the soul.

Rush is fantastic.  Rush is what you get when you get three guys with Ph.Ds in music into a band together.  Talent, a love for music, and a truly unique sound.

No one HAS to listen to them.  My post is mostly about bands that people think would benefit today's deteriorating music industry.  Frankly, despite a select few bands, it's crap, and getting worse.  Whatever happened to good ol' musical talent, regardless of the genre.  Oh, someone will probably say "Korn is really popular, so they must be good."  No comment smile.gif

Great music talent exists today in jazz, blues, and a variety of other genres, and used to exist heavily in rock and r&b.  Both of which have taken a dive into the shitter over the last decade.

Queen - These guys were so much more than We Are The Champions/We Will Rock You/Bohemian Rhapsody/Another One Bites the Dust.  I'm partial to their early stuff (1973-1977), but really all of it is good.

Elton John - But only his old stuff.  Everything since he became a Disney whore has been tripe.  Pre-1980 stuff is the best (e.g. Tiny Dancer, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Daniel).

Smashing Pumpkins - Melancholy and earlier only.

Kate Bush - You'll love her or you'll hate her, but you'll surely never call her music generic or derivative.

The Smiths and The Cure were emo twenty years before it was cool (and they were better than 99% of today's emo, too).

The Replacements - Forerunners to grunge, these guys had some great songs like "Bastards of Young" and "Left of the Dial."

Pink Floyd - Can't leave Gilmour & company out.  I was lucky enough to see them on their last tour, ten years ago.  Amazing show.

Bruce Springsteen - Check out his albums that weren't popular.  He's really a great songwriter.  For examples, see "The Ghost of Tom Joad" (later covered by Rage Against the Machine), and "Nebraska."

Jethro Tull - The full 43-minute version of "Thick as a Brick."  Need I say more?

alot of the bands that megadeath posted, most of todays youth have heard of. im referring to ozzy, sabbath and aerosmith and the others. but depending to the stations that one listens to they could hear rush and good ol bands. and im not talking about classic rock stations. here in San Antonio on 102.7 KROK and 99.5 KISS they can hear the occasional rush and good bands, thats how i know of 'em. and today's youth- namely the rappers/r&bers- couldnt care 2 cents about rock or other genres of music. but a good rock band about the music that don't use computers is smile empty soul.  <

Rush - had most of their albums - never saw them live
Iggy Pop - (had to put him in as his stageshow was out of this world)
Lynyrd Skynyrd - saw them recently supporting Deep Purple
Black Sabbath - Saw then once back in the 80's
Metallica - still put on a good show

(no particular order)

jimi hendrix
stevie ray vaughn
zakk wylde
joe satriani
steve vai
ry cooder
eddie van halen
david gimlour
roger waters
duane allman
tom morello
eric johnson
randy rhoads
neal schon
eric clapton

wow someone stop me.  Music doesn't mean the same to the bands now that it did to these people (with the exception of maybe morello who is still pretty recent).  I know I missed a lot....feel free to add to it.  names just keep on coming to me.....dickey betts, neil young, yngwie malmsteen.....not sure on all theses spellings.  ok I'm done I promise.

EDIT:  one more thing:  trey anastasio and any "jam bands" not included.  anyone listed above could've done what trey does 1000x better.

system of a down
taproot
chevelle
incubus
disturbed
rage against the machine
and a hell of a lot more....
