I know you just started cowbell just keep on going.  The first one could use some shadows enabled on the lights and maybe doing a little radiosity will improve the quality and photo-realism.  The abstract needs some work.  It's not a diamond effect it's the polygons not getting smoothed.  Not bad for a first try.  Make sure you use a Hypernurbs and raise a subdivision a notch to improve smoothness.  Here is one I threw together as an example.  Just treat it like you would a sig in photoshop.  Experiment!

I like it CB.  One thing though.  Make sure you set the Antialiasing settings to best when rendering a final.  That wallpaper looks like the geometry is antialiased but the textures aren't.

Those aren't bad, but if you want to get into 3D, I suggest learning to model first. Rendering and animation come much later.

Agreed. Any monkey can draw out of scale objects and throw some materials and lights on em and call it rendering. I prefer something that's actually as close to real as possible, meaning the object being modeled is correct.

give CB a chance, he just got started a couple of days ago.  lol  why does metal always gotta initiate the hating around here. tongue.gif  I've done entire maps for wolfenstein back in the day. Just do a quick search on google and find out.  I even modeled a few simple things like trees and stuff for a mod.  I don't care much for modeling.  At least not right now. laugh.gif My real passion is video.  Let's not slam the 3d noob just cuz he started a couple of days ago.  That's not the way to inspire, but it is the way to destroy someone's creativity.   pop.gif

thanks chux

I didn't make the sig. I don't have any desire nor time to make a sig. If I came off as harsh sorry. But the coolest part of the whole 3d world is getting to do modeling, not 3d orbs. The applying materials and adding light end of things are relatively simple. But if you don't have something cool to render than what's the point? You're far better off practicing making a more complex and life like model, because that is what's really going to give you something special in the end.

And trust me, I appreciate anyone getting into 3d rendering and such. There's a whole world of fields out there that it's relevant to at the moment, so it's certainly a decent thing to want to know. Plus it's simply cool.

If I can find anything I've done that is cool in any way and doesn't violate company policy to post I will

I must saying, from my point of view the modeling aspect of things makes truly amazing renderings and CGI. There are very few amazing things that are computer generated that aren't created off a strong model as a backbone. And it's so useful in SOOO many fields that learning it as a whole really is a cool thing. Everything from advertising, to automotive, to the movie industry use this stuff. I'll need to do something decent up in a few weeks when I have some time and post. Too busy ATM.

nice bro....how often do you work with....(what program are you using)?

I've used tons of programs but at work I mainly use Bentley's Microstation. It's more of an all in one CAD/Rendering app. Allows me to do detail production drawings for our production department and render. That was a pretty meak test, but I merely wanted to see how long it would take to render something relatively quick on this PC versus my old one when I first got it. Ill post another test or 2 before I leave work today. Ill just need to figure out where they all went. All my complicated stuff would be work related and thusly not cool to post on the net.

o do you remember the settings to get your balls that shiny...every time i try to shine mine they let a ring aorund the top...

It varies program to program. I could give you the material settings I used in microstation, but odds are you'd end up with different constraints, so my numbers wouldn't mean anything. Caustics in microstation, (Mainly glass like reflections/refractions) are kind of a pain in the ass to get to look right. And when they do they take a good deal of rendering power to get them to look decent.
Title: My First 3d
Post by: Rylinkus on August 11, 2006, 01:11:00 PM
Thanks. Appreciate the compliment. But honestly the rendering on the glass of those marbles is far better than any part of the table. By merely having a more robust model to render it makes the results all the more impressive. I mean, that table is all of 2 materials, aluminum and a top. So it's really no more difficult to get a good render from that model then the marble one. The difference is that the marble one is 3 spheres that I dropped in under a minute most likely. The table may have taken an hour. (Not sure now). On the rendering end I can almost promise getting the marbles to look decent took longer, so in the end Id wager the time spent on each is equivalent, yet one is just a nicer render as there's more stuff to render. Keep practicing man. It's really loads of fun and certainly something that can't hurt to know.

If CB had thought I was "hating," he would have said something. I think you're the only person that thinks I'm being rude with everything I say.  In fact, in re-reading my post, that would make me (if I were CB) want to stop following orb/ball and abstract tutorials and find out what modeling is all about. Think about it: being able to model anything you could possibly imagine and having it do anything you want. Isn't that more interesting than a orb/ball or an abstract? Of course, it is, and as you can see, he's on his way out of Orbland because he started modeling. tongue.gif

You know what, let me play hostile for one second. All this touchy feely you're being hostile BS in this thread is stupid. Grow up. Learn to deal with someone's opinion on an ONLINE forum. Jesus guys......

NOTHING I said was hostile, or intended to be hostile or anything else. So next time you feel like jumping on someones back, chose another guy, kay? Was supposed to be ""Done" anything else over the weekend?" As in, did CB do any other 3d work over the weekend, because there's more than you that's interested. This is what I do for a living and I love seeing other people's work. Beyond that I was merely saying my typing blew because I was a bit tired, because I put over 1300 miles on my motorcycle this weekend, (Not a touring bike by any means), helping my family out as they had a fire. Went home to help clean the house some and ended up errand boy as usual.... oh well, nice weekend to be on a bike.

So to sum up. I was tired. My typing was sloppy. (Hell I fucked up the explanation post after)  Nothing was meant to be negative in anyway. Stop assuming everyone has an attitude problem. beerchug.gif

Dude, talk about being all touchy feely.  I just simply wanted an explanation as to what you meant by what you said.  That's all.  As I recall you were the one who said, "Don't", which insinuates I was trying to start something. I wasn't, and it's not my fault you took it that way.  I'm sorry someone shit in your cereal but that happens to all of us.  Don't take it out on me cuz you had a bad day.

Why am I always drawn into these things?  Oh yeah I love drama! biggrin.gif

Collabric's Website

If that's not clear enough check out
Our Competitor's Website

They're pretty big about not putting out any info that could reveal our "trade secrets" and all. So I'm leary to show off much. But the company website will explain what we do pretty well I think. Mostly designing signs for trade shows and such. Pretty cool stuff.

As for my job description..... I don't even know if I have one. The title I use in company emails ranges from designer to production assistant to dark mage. I had a title. It was stripped from me as it no longer applied. No one will give me a new one so I feel as though I'm at my leisure to use whatever I feel.

As far as microstation, Bentley has just released Microstation XM. I find it pretty user friendly. I think the ACS makes it quite easy to work in 3d. And the 3d PDF stuff is simply awesome. I'm no expert with it, but I can certainly see where it could pay huge dividends. As with everything there are some weak points, and I do find Microstation slightly less stable then other apps I've used. But it works so damn well for what we do that it's hard to see us switching anytime soon.

dude what's with rabbit humping thing. lol thx for the compliments.  Most of these things are built out of simple shapes.  Oh and NURBS are your friends. The glass table is made of five sweep NURBS and the vase is a lathe NURBS.  The only thing I didn't model myself was the beetle on the table.  One other thing.  Radiosity and HDRI images will give you very realistic results but can take eons to render.  This uses a slightly weaker radiosity setting because otherwise it would take too damn long to render.  It took 40 mins. just to render this frame.  I really need to get me a dual core processor. sad.gif  As usual just let me know if you need help with anything.
