ok, since the last sotw discussion thread has been unpinned and closed, we're starting up the second runnings for it!
this forum is a little different than the SOTW discussion thread, being that it containts not only sotw but other graphics happenings.
things you can do:- Discuss the next SOTW theme.
- Discuss another designer's current sig.
- Discuss the entries and other things SOTW related.
things you can't do- no flaming other members.
- if you have a complaint with a member, don't litter the forum with them.
- keep negative, combative, and/or hassasing comments to a minimum
- not complying with XS rules(sig dimensions, multiple images, etc etc.), will get you warned.
alright, so hopefully we can continue this new beginning with a little more fun!
-
so we are nearing the voting period of our first team sotw, how are we going to vote? is it one vote per team? or one vote per person?
-
IMHO I think it should be individual votes; but like in the past....don't vote for yourself or your team.
-

agreed
-
My idea would involve the members saying what part of the sig they did. Then have everyone vote for what sig and whos part they liked best. One vote per person, no voting for you or your team. Then, when everyone finishes voting, tally the teams votes up and get an average.
QUOTE
Example:
Team A:
Member 1 and Member 2 make a sig, Member 1 does the left half and Member 2 does the right.
Member 1 gets four votes for his half and Member 2 gets two votes for his half. So Team A got an average of 3 votes for their sig.
Team B:
Member 3 and Member 4 make a sig, Member 3 does the basics of the sig, and Member 4 does all the details.
Member 3 gets no votes for his part of the sig and Member 4 gets five votes for his part. So Team A got an average of 2.5 votes for their sig.
EDIT: I had a second idea here, but I didn't like it too much. If anyone wants to hear about it, just say so.
-
i dont think its important to say what each person did, so far its pretty obvious, at least to me
-
IM BACK EVERYONE!!!
now to the subject
all of the tsotw sigs kickass, all look very nice, so far all of them look they have alot of teamwork going for them, not one of them has an element from one person overshadowing the others work. i iwsh i wouldve been able to sign up for the contest, but theres always next time.
btw, i got two new sigs to add here that i made while i was gone.
how do they look??? (and a half finished popout sig for the dd sotw... i never finished it... if anyone wants to psd to finish it you can have it, ill just have to upload it to filefront or something...)

and the half finished one, its a shame, someone should do something better with the sig, the car is such a beast...

-
Look it ol' ocelot pimpin his works. Stop hogging the limelight ya drunk.
Anyway, Yeah I don't like the thought of voting on each individual's work. It is a Team SOTW afterall like Metal said. I for one am glad metaldevil is here to put things in order and ocelot to screw them up*just kidding*
.
Now let's get to voting and have some
.
-
hmm but what about the people who couldnt enter and what not do they still vote or just the tems will vote?
-
QUOTE(socalx @ Jul 11 2006, 02:14 AM)

Oh I imagine everyone should vote. Enter of not. Everyone in this forum should vote.
-
yea I dont think we have enough teams to really decide who one
I think it should just be everyone has one vote but votes for a team, not each individual, thats the point of TSOTW. I think metal probably said all this, but I skimmed and saw the word rant so i skipped it
.
-
i do believe we're going to just go by the everyone votes for a single team. that seems like it wouldd make the the most sense and everything.
-
Makes sense, then we would have the most votes. Instead of half the total votes if it was one per team.
-
QUOTE(CattyKid @ Jul 11 2006, 10:29 PM)

what does that say on the top right? is it bleed blood?
-
yessssss
-
just wondering, thanks
-
lol
its all good
what do u guys think of this..

i cut the dude out from .. ->>This wallpaper.
i tired to use abstract-ish-grunge..
i might use it again for like a raining type of sig..
but wut do u guys think of it..
i wasnt trying to like make it loook good but it turned out good to me..
-
lol..
i mean like i was just messin around bored and like i wasnt trying to make it look good.. but it turned out to be good.. i was really payin attention to how it looked..
i dont kno..
-
I think what he is saying that you generally go into photoshop either making something to look good or just mess around till there is something good. Rarely is there a mess around till I feel that Ive messed around enough, theres a goal somewhere whether you know what it is or not, but its generally summed up into "good"
and yea it looks pretty neat
-
i only use pen tool to cut out images.
as for tsotw, good job awal and dman, looks like your sig is a hit. just wondering, which one is awal?
im guessing right side.
-

Really.
I learn something everyday. I gotta look into this.
-
just thought of this today I really think we should have contests with hidden authors, because I really think all these were great and hard to choose, and peronally it was hard to keep peronal reasons out of the choosing process
-
ya it was really hard to choose they were all so good lol and nice sig btw dragon
-
QUOTE(awal @ Jul 13 2006, 12:28 AM)

Yea, the right... Im bigger. You cant see it in the sig, but he has a cross bow in his right hand. With the axe on the back, he is basically a bad ass. Like me of course
of course. the hidded authors idea sounds good. maybe hidded votes aswell for added uncertanty.
-
Yes the Pen Tool is best for rendering as it gives u the most control haha
-
i just recently started to use the pen tool to cut out stuff. before i just used a round brush.
-
I just had this pretty awesome idea for a contest today
it would require an arbiter but here we go
people would all sign up for sig/PMC contest
then said arbiter would message everyone seperately a different person from the registerd that they will have to simulate or mimic their style. Then when completed submit their picture back to the arbiter and would be posted anonymously.
I think it will work because everyone here knows each other fairly well and we have all posted a gallery either here or on DD, EMP, or Chopped, so people could do their homework.
whadya think?
-
jhfljgfds i think it would be pretty cool especially because we would know whos sig it was thats posted =D
-
i think it'd be cool, if everyone signs up, then each person PM's the arbiter and tells him/her who they want to emulate, the arbiter can then tell them whether or not that person is taken yet or not...
or... just go with the first thought, where the arbiter decides everything
-
I call arbiter.
My PM box is empty, and I have aim
AIM: Chilidog332001
EDIT: And I have loads of spare time.
-
i just thought of this...
nothign special really. .
we dont see much wallpapers around here. well i havnt. but .. but if the theme could be like abstract, grunge, grungstract or anything and make a wallpaper.. we have a lot of skill with people in sigs in some small or good size demenstions. maybe we should see wut ppl have skill with rather large areas. as in a desktop size or something.
it was just something that came to mind
-

lets wait and do it as an official contest after TSOTW is over
-
yay, new sig, hows it look? similar to my old one, but this ones looks "bloated?"
ill have to redo it sometime...
ah, you want wallpaper huh dragon? well check this out
-
yay i made a new digi-design sig. hows it look?
-
so next sotw anytime soon? imo, i dont think the emulating others style would work. the only peoples style i can actualy define is mine, abstract grunge; haz and wahoo, tech; cowbell, tech abstract grunge; and maybe dragons, abstract grunge. the team sotw was pretty fun. we could either do 2 man teams again, or i was thinking of having all the contestants sign up, then have the teams distributed evenly into 2 teams. then each team would make a wallpaper. depending on how many people enter, we could do 3 or maybe 4 teams. but since this is a SIG of the week contest, i might save that idea for a completely diferent contest. if you guys want to keep it simple, have the traditional sotw and for a theme make it old style. like make your sig look worn and tattered. some ideas could be sepia tone, rips, stains, rust, dirt, smudge, etc. lets get this thing rollin.
-
Define mine if you can.
-
QUOTE(Modderxtrordanare @ Jul 24 2006, 09:03 PM)

Cut & Paste. rofl J/k
I don't like the idea of copying each other's styles either.
-
Damn right your j/k.
j/k
-
sounds good headshot.
wen i was talking about the wallpaper thing.
i was just thinkin that since everything r good at making sigs,
which are small sized areas, to make a wallpaper
b/c of the big area that it has.
it was just an idea.
-
i have to be honest with you guys, i think the wallpaper idea is a good idea. i've started doing larger things lately(the two latest themes for DD, forums/homepage) and i really enjoy doing larger pieces alot more than little sigs. they're more challenging, since it can sometimes be harder to replicate the same effect onto a big wallpaper, that you've gotten down into a little sig. either we can do wallpapers, or large pieces next(500x500 is a size a like to fool around in).
-
I also liek this idea, and haz i helped...
does it hafta be a WALLpaper? or jsut a big document.
-
maybe a 800x600 or something.. i dont kno
.
or maybe just big enough for the forum b/c biggers
ones would have to be a link
and that would like.. stupid.
i dont kno.. anything good i guess
-
we should do whatever the length of the forum is. no body likes a streched forum.
-
QUOTE(h34d5h0tz @ Jul 27 2006, 11:01 PM)

we should do whatever the length of the forum is. no body likes a streched forum.
but some of us do have high resolution desktops
I think that just have it either 800x600 or 1024x768 and should have links to them anyways because not all of us have great connections.
-
i was thinkin that links would be too much of a pain.
if u think about it.
but i guess it will work.
and the 800x600 and 1027x768 sounds good but
we'll have to see
-
if everyone here uses photobucket, you can just save images on quality 8(there isn't barely any difference in quality versus 12). and then we can just "th_"image-name.jpg it. just for everyone's knowledge who didn't know, you CAN go into the photobucket settings and change the max image size to 512, versus 256kb. and when you're at the quality selector in photoshop, if you look at the bottom of that window, it will tell you how large the image output file will be. all of my "mastering the pen tool tutorial" is hosted on photobucket, at a wopping 500x4450 pixels, and at only 357.51 KB (366094 bytes). you really can't see any quality degrade, http://i26.photobuck...thepentool2.jpg . if we use the photobucket's "th_" trick, in conjuction with saving it with a little bit of a lower quality, then this should work fine.. if i'm not too lazy when this contest is over, i can host a simple html page/images on DD, so that you can see all of the photo's next to each other, in full size.
plan?
-
my max size on photobucket is 1 mb. as i was looking at my account settings, i noticed that i get 4191 monthly hits. just out of curiosity, how much hits does everyone else get?
-
nice catch h5.. last time i edited my settings(about 2 months ago), it only allowed up to 512kb.. they upgraded apparently

i only get.. 2921 monthly hits..
...h5, mr popular
-
seems very odd.. government conspiracy maybe?..
-
Well, DD's down again.
If they don't come back up by the end of the day, I'll post the PMC here.
Edit: Now they're back up.
-
i only have 1651 =[
-
alright.. i guess we r doin the wallpaper idea?
-
12573 Hits
PWNED!
Maybe it's because a lot of you guys mostly post in the GFX forum?
By the way, what is the "th_" trick?
-
ummm i think it makes the image a thumbnail or something =/
-
are we like ever going to have aother SOTW lol? just wondering
uhhh you just make a new topic lol but you might wanna try dafont.com

I'll officially start one tomorrow. It will be landscapes due to popular demand.
-
cool, What kind of competition are we talking about? Sotw or something else?
-
Probably some sort of PMC?
-
if everyone's interested, i can start a SOTW up?
-
sure the more the merrier
-
Didn't we stop doing those for a reason?
-
didnt awal say no more SOTW

_IPC has started.

i do agree with the whole rule thing, the rules had started like that before i ever started moderating, and frankly i was never sure why they were so strict. if you could agree/disagree/suggest on the new rules i've come up with below, that'd be nice.
- SOTW DESIGN THEME WILL GO HERE(whatever that may be, this will change obviously)
- Max dimensions are 450x140, no exceptions
- you may do any sig size beneath this one(as before).
- No animations - unless otherwise stated in the them, if theme permits you may not use it as your default Xbox-Scene signature(as this goes against XS rules).
- No nudity, racism, or suggestive themes are allowed
- your signature will be removed from the contest and you will be reported.
- Please follow proper Xbox Scene rules & guidelines, as we're still within the boundries of the rules even in the graphics section.
- You are allowed as many text-based changes to your entry as needed, and you are allowed 1 new entry
- this may include correcting a spelling error, or changing the subtext, anything else please contact a graphics moderator(Hazanko, Awal or metaldevil) if you have any question.
tell me how those sound, i'm thinking these will be pretty close to final rules if everyone is ok with them.
-
sounds good
-
^agreed.
You know, because it's just a contest for fun, we really don't need to follow x-s's sig rules so long as we don't use them as sigs.
Like if you make a sig thats 450x200, that could be fine for the contest it's just you can't use it as your current sig. That way the 450x141 entry wouldn't have to be disqualified.
You could make animated sigs as an entry and use a still picture as your current sig.
Everyone wants to have fun here, but no one wants to be eliminated by a technicality. Maybe we could be a little more relaxed on the rules for the entries.
Rules for current sigs would be separate.
-
^^ yah i agree since it is just for fun cuz not every sig looks good at that size.but we should have a minimum and maximum size tho encase someone just gets ridiculous with it
-
i'm really thinking that the size dimensions should stay the same, but there WILL be a bit more leniancy than what was offered earlier.
animated signatues are still a no-no in my mind... as i think that an animated signature is nearly a completely different breed than an un-animated one, and including both into a contest would not be fair. especially since people who use paint.net and other 3rd party software(software other than photoshop rather) wouldn't have an opportunity to submit anything animated. gotta keep things as fair as possible, while not completely nazi-tizing everything.
without question anything innapropriate should not be entered, for obvious reasons.
SOTW was closed earlier because moderation was a "bit" shorthanded, and flaming and the like was getting much too out of hand. us moderators aren't here to handle EVERY single little confrontation, not in my opinion should we be handing out warnings for miniscule things. it's deciding the line between everything that makes things much too complicated, thus SOTW was closed and discontinued for the above reasons.
rules govern everything, if there wasn't rules nothing would work - but at the same time too many rules can create trouble, and people rebel. while the new SOTW rules WILL be more leniant, there is no chance that rules are just going to be removed. the rules that i've come up with, in my opinion, level things off for everyone - and will help people using "other software" still have a fighting chance. the previous rules did more than just protect everyone's feelings, they protected them to the point where anything deemed "out of line" would be taken upon with a sharp scolding and a warning. finding the perfect line is what we've got to work on, so for now i think we'll stick with the current rules i've posted above - and we'll go from there.
i know i'm coming off maybe a bit strong in this post, but i'm just letting everyone know that all the previous flaming and everything that had gone on in the past is not tolerated, and if it happens again things will be put into motion. i know this hasn't happened yet but: please don't argue with the moderators, give suggestions(as you have been doing) and things will be thought about.
hopefully this cleared some things up for people - i'm starting the SOTW now!
-
I wasn't around in the GFX section when the SOTW was going on before... but since I've joined in on the GFX community I have noticed that the flaming has almost disappeared... I know it'll still be around but I've noticed that more and more members have been supportive of others work and giving pointers to help those new out and not just been downing people's work... I'm thinking that we'll have a good time this go 'round
at least I hope so... don't make me be wrong
-
^Competition has a way of bringing out the dark side of everyone.
The GFX forum is world famous (seriously
) for it's friendly atmosphere. The SOTW was the only thing that caused any trouble.
Everyones had a good long break, so I think this time around everyone will feel refreshed, and be more of a good sport.
-
Maybe we should re-birth the SOTW discussion thread too?
Then again we could just through ideas around here too.
-winter theme
-cars
-chicks(always good)
-favorite foods
-pixel art (old school nintendo and sega grafix)
-comic strip sig (three or four cells 450x140 px.)
(btw i'm usually inspired by whats around me)
-computer sigs
-old relic sigs "a la" indiana jones
-
bazooka, bazooka, bazooka zooka bubble gum. hehe =]
-
i think the pixel art would be really fun to do
-
^that's where I got the idea.
-
so are we going to do another sotw anytime soon
-
I love you metal for bringing back the SOTW
TOO bad I'm working on a vexel for my friend's birthday right now so I don't have any time to enter.
well, maybe if I finish early. haha
-
!!!!!! YAY sotw is back =D woot woot.
-
man you are even getting me excited
Maybe I will do one
-
There's a lot of old school game entries.
Interesting.
