Title: Animated Gifs And Avatars - A Tutorial
Post by: xboxbox451 on April 05, 2006, 02:45:00 PM
This tutorial illustrates how to create an animated Gif or Avatar utilizing a freeware application titled "Gif Animator 2.0" made by Ulead back in the late 90's. This application is rather old and doesnt offer advanced features such as 'tweening', though it can easily create a basic animated Gif, Avatar, slide show or smiley.
You will need a photo or drawing application to make your images to use with this animator. You could also use current images to create a slide show, though the images should be cropped to a uniform size prior to adding them to the animator.
This tutorial is ideal for those of you that have a basic photo or drawing application and are looking for a method to animate some of your illustrations in a Gif format.
REQUIREMENTS
Extraction utility such as Winrar to extract the downloaded program -- Winrar Link
Photo or drawing software (for those creating thier own images)
Ulead Gif Animator 2.0 Freeware Program (links to freeware sites hosting this program are listed below)
If any or all these links are broken, try googling for 'Ulead Animator 2.0 freeware' to locate another freeware site hosting this program.
P.S. Xbox-Scene rules allow the use of an animated Avatar, however they do not allow the use of an animated sig.

Thanks.
I mainly put this tutorial together for the ones that cant afford Photoshop but still want to animate a Gif. Though if you have Photoshop then ImageReady is the way to go.

Are you trying to install the program? What operating system are you running?
The app supposedly works on Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT4 / 2000/ WinXp.
I, myself am using WinXp and it works fine.
I should mention the app does not work on Mac's or Linux environments.

What link did you download from?
Did you extract the file properly?
Once the file is extracted, you should see a file named 'GA20F.EXE'. Do you see that file? If so is that what your trying to install.
If still not working, try downloading again from a different link.

I did a quick google and found that the problem might be related to a missing or damged autoexec.nt file in your system files.
QUOTE(from MS Knowledgebase)
Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program
SYMPTOMS If you try to start or install an MS-DOS-based or a 16-bit Windows-based program on your Windows XP-based computer, you may receive an error message that is similar to one of the following:
16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem path to the program that you are trying to start or install C:\Winnt\System32\config.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and MS Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem path to the program that you are trying to start or install config.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and MS Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem path to the program that you are trying to start or install C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and MS Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Although you may be prompted to quit the program or ignore the error message, either selection makes the program quit.
CAUSE This issue may occur if one or more of the following files are missing or damaged: Config.nt Autoexec.nt Command.com
Google this --> Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
There should be a link to Microsoft at the top of the search results page that will explain how to try and resolve the problem.
I would'nt attempt messing with any of those files if your not sure what your doing or you have important data on your PC, as I dont know what affect replacing those files will cause. If your having problems installing the app you could try the fix at your own risk.

I unpinned this because I added it to the tutorial topic.
Good work though!
Thanks
@_iffy, just curious if you had any luck installing the app. I installed and tested the Animator 2.0 program on a Windows XP Pro SP2 system, and a Windows XP Home SP1 system, and the app installed and worked flawlessly. I think the problem lies with some of your system files as stated in the support topic I posted.
If anyone else has a hard time installing the program please list your operating System version and problem in this thread.
