Post by: SickJoda on March 25, 2006, 01:54:00 PM
Hey Guys,
Here are just some Sigs ive make (w. Photoshop CS2),
I just started, and just wanted you guys to put your imput into them, and some Tips!!

Somethings I am Having trobles with are:
- Erasing extra stuff (other words)
- Cant find normal Eraser tool
- Once i paste picture into sig, i cant move it
- Getting new Fonts for Words

REMEMBER, I AM still learning, so lets keep the Flaming to a minimum! lol.

If you want, you can post a Tut that helped you(or a link to your favorite site for Brushes). Also, I need to learn how to make Boarders.

Cheers,

1. erasing what's there and making it look like it was never there can be a tough task, and there are probably tuts for that.
2. right click on the eraser tool and you should be able to find it
3. that's because the pic is in a different layer, find the layers window and click on the one with the pic. (too lazy to post pics)
4. go to dafont.com and find one, then put it C:\windows\fonts i think

and this would be the best place to go for brushes deviantart.com
and go to good tutorials for some tuts to start you off.
i've been out of the loop for awhile and there might be better places to go.

You won't get flamed here, WE don't do that.
It's a great start, I like the 3rd one down and the 4th down (needs work on the fonts though, but then again they all do).
As to moving pictures, when you paste a picture it should go into a new layer.  You should be able to move the picture without moving the background because pasting the picture creates a new layer.  If it does not, create a new layer (click New Layer Button on bottom left toolbox), then paste the picture.
For fonts, www.dafont.com is the best, hands down.  Or, wait until Hazanko (I think) replies.  He made a HUGE fontpack that has hundreds of fonts (I use a lot of them).  There is also a pack of fonts/brushes that Awal posted before, but I'm not sure how long ago.
Here is Awal's Pack
That would be a great start.

As for brushes, www.deviantart.com has SO many.  Just search for "brushes" or "photoshop brushes" or "fractal brushes" or "grunge brushes" or "natural brushes."  Any brush you want, and they should be able to pretty much fit your needs.

For the normal eraser tool, do you mean you want, like, a square or a circle?  Anyway, for the circle, select the eraser, right click on an open picture, click the circle with a triangle in it, and choose "reset brushes," or load the standard brushes.
To erase some stuff, you can just totally erase it and use the CLONE tool and the Healing Tool over the clone brush to make it look more natural.
Here, look at this pic that I did for the sig of the week.  The pic was from behind the net, so the net was all over the goalie's body.  So I used the clone tool and the Healing Brush to get rid of most of the net, although you can still see it a little (I could probably do better now, but I am better now than I used to be.
IPB Image

EDIT: Dammit, Camdog, I just said pretty much everything you did.

OK!

here is once i got after i used all that feedback

IPB Image

I did it in about like 10-15 min. i thinks its pretty good, compared to my others, i played around with some lighting and stuff this time, if i could change one thing it would be the colour the "SickJoda" because you cant really see it that good with the Lens Flair there, but ya thats about all i want to change, but i dont know how so..

Cheers!

I've got a few reccomendations.  For the text, I'd put a 1 or 2 pixels Stroke around it.  It almost always spices it up and separates it from the background, as well as spicing it up and making it more readable.  Also, you might want to go around the edges of the render (picture) with the Blur tool at, about... 50% to make it look smoother.
I like the lens flare in this one, but make sure to use it sparingly.  Often times it can look pretty cheesy.  Finally, try brushing the background a little to spice it up.

VERY good for a new sig artist, though.  I started a month or two ago, and have gotten much better thanks to all of these guys.

MUCH better.  MUCH.  No comparison to your first sigs.
I really like the spawn one.
In the Spawn one, what font did you use for your name?

For brushes, keep on looking on Deviantart.com, the have ALL the brushes yuou could ever want/need, also the Seagulls thing will give you a lot of cool stuff.

For the Border on the text, the "Stroke," look at this image, from Awal:
IPB Image
Click on the "Stroke" box, select it, and the rest is self-explanatory.

As for the border, check on this page
It's how these guys taught me to do borders.

I'm going to encourgae your to read over that thread, there is a lot of teaching going on in there. That was my first Photoshop thread, much like this is for you.

I think you have gotten MUCH better, keep up the good work and keep them coming!

This next sig is sorta Busy, its hard with the text i used, being all capitals all the time, and also the 2 pictures..

This PC is the one im building right now, and im selling my Xbox to finish it, then im buying another used xbox. then gunna mod it with a Xecuter3, ANYWAYS!, heres this sig..

IPB Image

just wondering where i install Flock too? i just put it in the Photoshop CS2 folder..?

Also, can i add effects to my boarder? because ive seen cooler boarders then this, its quite simple to do this one, but how would i do the FX on it?
Title: Some Of My Sigs!
Post by: juanman on March 26, 2006, 02:19:00 PM
yeah im pretty sure you install it to the cs2 folder
good job on the sigs, if i may add something, i think you should change the font on the megaman sig to a old 8-bit era font to keep with the visible pixels in the megaman pic
just go to dafont.com and search for some fonts under like techno blocks or the one retro,
just look around till you find some fonts that fit in with the megaman era
but good job on the sigs, big improvements over the first
and one of the ways i do sigs is to use the rectangle marque tool to select a rectange in the pic with equal area all around, then you go to select and inverse, so the opposite area is now selected and you can fill it with gradients or other effecfts and filters
good luck

back to mine, i tried for about 15 minutes to round the corners on the grey boxes to match the controllers but i realized after i did them, the smb cartridge covered it up.
o well, but how does it look?

Then i took a really cool font and put my name in it, then brushed up the picture of Lucifer a little bit. its pretty cool. check it out:

What do you mean "Locked"? Are you saving them as PSDs or just jpegs? You have to save it as a PSD (and a couple others, but let's keep it simple) otherwise there won't be any layers.
Title: Some Of My Sigs!
Post by: juanman on March 29, 2006, 07:08:00 PM
what you should do is save it as a .psd then merge all the layers and save it as a .png or a jpeg
that way youll still have the psd to you can edit stuff if you want

I like the brushing on the gun, I think it was a good and well-though out touch.
However, yo may also want to put a motion blur or use the WIND filter on the text as well to give it a better "noving" look.
Also, I don't know if you like the background, but I personally think you should brighten it up a little.  It looks like there is text in there, but I can only see a few letters.

I'd say try to vary up the styles of your sigs as well as the backgrounds (try and make one, maybe, with a brighter background).  I had the same problem, most of my backgrounds looked very similar to each other.
Also, maybe try a bevel and emboss on some of the text.  To do this, right click a layer and choose "Blending Options."  Then, check Bevel and Emboss and select the box.  You can edit from there.  The best way to learn what everything does is to play around with it, for a while if you have to just until you get the hang of it.
I also suggest maybe using some filters, they can make stuff look cool as well (not TOO many, though, cause it can look cheesy).

Otherwise, VERY good work, you are progressing very quickly/

(Note: you may want to get a few more brushes, Abstract and Grunge)

Not to be rude, but step away from the grunge.  You aren't really improving in it much.  I'm not trying to be mean, but when you learn more styles, you can put em all together and make a unique look.

How about abstract?  Abstract can be a nice beginner technique.
Just go to good-tutorials.com and search for abstract.

Try using more contrast (such as my current sig) using bright colors next to darker ones...

Get some straight lines in there...
Get curves in there...
Experiment.
You can only go so far with one technique. I personally get bored doing the same stuff over and over, therefore nothing I do looks too much alike over any length of time. Look around at other stuff you like and immitate them (such as ads in magazines, websites, clothes, etc). Over time you'll develoe ur own flavor of stuff like zeebo said.
Title: Some Of My Sigs!
Post by: zeebo on April 17, 2006, 09:22:00 AM
When I began creating graphics, I usually made sigs in this order.
2 abstract
1 grunge
1 tech
I learned a bit from each, such as placement of 3d abstract renders (from the abstract sigs I created).  Good brushing (from the grunge technique).  From the tech I didn't learn much except pattern placements, which can improve a sig greatly.  Then create a unique sig or two adding all the stuff you learned.  Then start over again with the abstract, etc.  This will help you improve in each catagory and improve your overall unique technique.  After you get pretty experienced in the abstract, grunge, and tech style, you can move on to some more advanced stuff such as blur sigs, retro, smudge, etc.

Hope this helps you some, I enjoy most of your work already, I'm just trying to tip ya on how to get even better  wink.gif .

Make the black text smaller and center it vertically, make the spaces in between each line smaller (too big of a gap), and move the text away from the computer a little bit more (but not too much).... that'll help it a lil bit more.
