It's been a while since I've been on the forums so I'm sure I've missed a lot of info...
Anyhow, a friend of mine had an Xbox that since got fried, and I replaced the mother board and PSU for him. The new motherboard came with its original hard drive so I had no trouble TSOPing it, but when I pluged in the pre-modded HDD from the previous Xbox I realized that it is still locked with the old motherboards EEPROM HDD key.
Has anybody come up with anything to universally unlock HDDs yet? It seems like I remember glancing at something like that a few months ago, but I can't remember where I read it at.

Is the stock drive? If so which one? WD? Slim Seagate?
I've got a WD that's locked. If you have a fix, I'd love to hear it. I'm currently looking for a compatible mobo I can solderthe old eeprom chip onto to unlock it. If you have something easier, that'd be helpful. Itried HDUNLOCk.EXE, with wdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwd as my password, but no dice.

The WD80EB (stock western digital) can definitely be unlocked with that password. It is meant to be all in capitals though and the version you used was too short, it's meant to be:
WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD
I don't think you can do a master password with hdunlock either just the user pw (the WDC... pw is the master password) use atapwd to unlock it.
If this doesn't work it probably means you have locked it with one of the tools that sets the master pw so try TEAMASSEMBLY (set if you use config magic) and XBOXSCENE (can't remember what it is but something sets this as the master pw, maybe newest versions of evoX???).
EDIT:

There is a company with software to do it, that works pretty much universally, but it costs $50 a pop.

Could even try XBOXLINUX

I locked it with slayer's 2.6 Anybody know if there is a master password for it, or does it just use the WD master. I will try with ATAPWD. Hope it workks!

Well first off, thanks for reading my post all the way through.......
Second, it is a PRE-MODDED WESTERN DIGITAL from the previous Xbox. It was locked with a SmartXX LT. The chip was damaged so there is no way to recovoer the EEPROM short of desoldering the programable chip from the LT and putting it on another one (something I'm sure as hell not going to do...).
The original Xbox was a 1.6. The new one had been assembled from spare parts and is now a 1.0. Like I said; as is, the 1.0 Xbox works with its STOCK HDD. It does not work with the MODDED one.

HAHA
That first part wasn't for you alexspqr! Actually you've helped me quite a bit and I'm very grateful!
I'll try it out and let you know what goes down.

evox should set the master password to TEAMASSEMBLY

i unlocked one of my Western Digitals with TEAMASSEMBLY. the other refuses to unlock with WDCWDCetc., XBOX-SCENE, XBOX-LINUX or TEAMASSEMBLY. I've tried varieties of all of them, but no dice....but I got an xbox for my buddy today and it's a 1.2, so i'm going to remove the eeprom from the broken modo and unlock the leftover WD.
try with no hyphens.

The WDCWDC.... password works on a stock western digital using SECURE ERASE - you cannot just unlock it with that password. The result is that the drive is unlocked, but the data is also gone.

http://www.llamma.co...0Drive.htm#slim No. The result is that the drive is unlocked. I have personally done this on my friends hdd who tried to kill his softmod (locked the hdd with the wrong pw) you don't lost any data. Also you don't do it by erasing, you just unlock with master password.

Well, after unlocking the Western Digital, I put it in my xbox, only to find it locked again. I tried atapwd again, and now that doesn't work. Any ideas?
Yeah, sorry should have said this already. If you unlock a drive it will lock again when it loses power. If you want to stop it doing this you need to disable the locking (another option in the atapwd menu). If done correctly the + underneath the E should be set a -.
Can't remember if you're putting this in a chipped or softmodded box. If you're putting it in a chipped box do what I said, otherwise you need to unlock it and then lock it (user pw) with the hdd key for that xbox.

I did disable the lock. Or at least I selected that option, and now the password has changed. I unlocked it with TEAMASSEMBLY the first time, but now nothing works.

The master password shouldn't ever change unless you explicitly set it (or something like config magix/evox explicitly sets it). There is a maximum number of attempts at the master pw (5?? maybe) after this the hdd must be powered off. If you were playing around with it this could have happened.

unfortunately, right after unlocking the hdd, i placed it immediately in the xbox, which told me it was locked. The first attempt at unlocking it with the same code said it was locked. A mystery worthy or Sherlock Holmes.
