Title: I Need Opinions On What Kind Of Wireless Setup I Should Use

I want to connect wirelessly from my Xbox to my D-Link wireless b router (model DI-514). I want to know if there is a cheaper alternative than using the official "xbox wireless adapter" that sells for $100. I plan to get an Xbox 360 in the future as well. So is there a device out there someone can recommend that is cheaper than $100 and is compatible with both the Xbox and Xbox 360? I've read about people using an "access point" or a "wireless bridge". Are these the same thing? Is it possible to set up another wireless router for the Xbox to send/receive data?

My goal is to be able to connect to Xbox Live or be able to connect to the internet using XBMC and to my PC when I have my mod chip on. What would you recommend I do?


P.S. I wanted to search for a similar topic instead of starting this one but the xbox-scene search was down and that alternate xbox-scene google search was getting me nowhere.

Ok update. I now have a D-Link DI-524 Wireless G router. My other one died on me.

I did manage to find some information. It looks like I could use a wireless adapter for a single device or a wireless bridge if I wanted to connect multiple devices but those are still typically around $100.

Wireless routers are pretty cheap so does anyone know if I could configure another router at my xbox to transmit the xbox signal?

No, I am pretty sure that you cant config a router to wirelessly send to another router, at least not with the D links (I got one).  If you could figure out how to beable to set up one of the wlan ports as a host, then you could, but i dont think you can. I think pretty much your only option is to use a wireless bridge, sorry.  You could check ebay for one or something, i wasnt aware they where that expensive.

I would avoid the MN-740 Wireless G Adapter like the plague, as you can not add WEP Key, SSID, or any other settings directly to the device. These settings all need to be entered into your XBox and if you have modded it already then you will not be able to change these settings, at least that has been my experience.

Strange...I was able to enter those settings on the XBox with no problems...everything is locked down & working perfectly.


In response to the original poster's question:  Some routers will allow you to bridge them.  You'll have to check the settings on the router to do so.  Typically you lose any other functionality when doing so, however.

Check Ebay.  Many times you can save a few dollars by buying used.  I got my MN-740 for $60 on Ebay...

Hey all right! Some responses! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Thank you for your thoughts. Right now it looks like a wireless bridge is the safest most reliable way to go but it's still $100. The thought of getting another router and seeing if I can bridge it is intriguing but I have to make sure if its even capable of doing so. If so would I still be able to use the wireless security on them? The wireless adapter option still seems like a possibility but I would like to be able to have two systems (Xbox, Xbox 360) hooked up at the same time (and no they aren't going to be on at the same time) using a hub. I've heard that using a hub to connect both systems and then plugging the hub into a wireless adapter wouldn't work. (For the record I'm a little leery about purchasing sensitive electronic equipment on Ebay especially if its used. I learned that my last router got damaged when I moved and it can now only transfer at a rate of around 300-500Kbps whereas my new router allows me to get my full internet speed of 4Mbps. My old router used to be able to transfer 3Mbps just fine at my old place when I had a 3Mbps internet connection.)


So again to sum up my current options:

1. Wireless bridge.

2. Wireless router set up in bridge mode.

3. Wireless adapter and use a hub to have both systems connected so I don't have to keep swapping the ethernet cord back and forth between systems.

Anymore thoughts or opinions on this issue would be greatly appreciated (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
