Title: Need Some Parallel Parking Tips
Post by: FreewayX327 on November 27, 2005, 11:49:00 AM
Alright im taking my road test in 2 weeks and i need some help. Can anyone give me some tips to parallel parking? I've been practicing with my parents navigator but i still can't get it perfect. My problem with it is knowing when to cut the wheel back. I either end up hitting the curb or being to far from the curb. And sometimes the back end of the car is sticking out. This was a lot of harder than before.

The test might not be as hard as you think, at least here it isnt. They give you a huge space to parallel park into so its not that hard, but once again thats here.

Contrary to popular beleif, you dont fail the test if you cant parrallel park. Hell, in my state they dont even ask you to do it. A 3 point turn is the worst they ask.

do the best you can, and when they ask why you parked so far away from the curb, just tell them that you don't want to scratch up your rims.

I didn't have to parrelel on my test either. They did make me do an emergency stop though. If they do that to you man remember your ebrake hahah and hazards. They had me do it on some back alley road that was gravel and I didn't pay attention to doing that stuff since no other cars were around and got marked down alot for that.

In addition you probably won't have to worry about parking a big ass SUV. It will probably be a compact 4-door car. As always, whenever possible back in. Truth be told I have never mastered the art of parallel parking. I always end up at some weird angle, get out laugh and just leave it there.

Parallell parking isnt hard. Its easier to do than it is to spell... maybe I just should have payed more attention in engrish. I am the self proclaimed best paralell parker in my town, because nobody here can friggin get it right. I actually got a ticket for how I parked once. Some jackass in a navigator parked directly in the middle of 2 spots. It was probably a female also. So there was half a car space left... I parked sideways in it about an inch away from the navi and the person behind it parked close to them too so they were fucked. The only reason I got a ticket is because the person that drove it, which did turn out to be a woman on a cell phone smoking... thats real fuckin safe. Anyway, the meter bitch left the ticket on my windshield while I was walking out. I looked at it and just laughed then threw it in the trash can (so she couldnt be a smartass and get me for littering) and left.
FYI. PArking tickets on private property do not have to be paid. Well, they do, but they cannot boot your car because of it. IT is not government controlled, these people just pretend they have power. All they can do is get your car towed. The tickets are not the same as a gov issued parking ticket. Know your laws before you try and be a cool smartass rebel like me.

Yeah, I can parallel park with my eyes closed. I didn't have to do it on my test, although it's optional. (WI)
Anyways, you asked for tips. You're lucky i'm an insomniac.
GRANULATED'S 4 STEPS TO PERFECT PARALLEL PARKING!!!!
Approach the space, pull halfway into it, and then out, so that you are facing the space with the rear end of your car as shown.
STEP TWO
Turn your wheel to the RIGHT, so that the wheels are in the direction indicated. Start backing in the direction of the arrow.
STEP THREE
Straighten the wheel when your mirror is roughly inline with the other car's bumper.
STEP FOUR
Making sure the nose of your car will clear the car in front of you, begin turning the wheel to the LEFT. Follow the arrow. You should be perfectly in your spot!
SO, in conclusion, the 4 steps are, approach, backing with the wheel to the right, backin with the wheel straight, backing with the wheel to the left. You won't have to do too much with the wheel to the right if you do your approach right.
LOTS AND LOTS OF PRACTICE. Get to know exactly how big your car is.
If you're hitting the curb, you're not straightening the wheel or going left fast enough.
If you're too far away, you're not backing straight back (step 3) far enough.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

haha^^
thanks for your help guys. well thanks granulated because your the only one that gave me help while everyone else was just saying they didnt have to parallel park for their road test . I tried a lot of differnt ways and i think i finally found my way of getting in. After a lot of practicing i got in just about every time. i hit the curb and got a little too close to it but thats alright right?? As long as you don't go on the curb you won't get any points off right?
I don't get why I have to parallel park to pass my road test. I live in the suburbs . I do not see any car parallel parking at all. The only place i would see myself parallel parking is in philly which is a good 30 minutes away. doesn't make sense

I tried to, but the water shorted out my monitor. Whoops.
Try not to hit the curb. It's not good for your rims. Just turn back (step 3, I think) about 6 inches earlier, and you'll be fine.
Glad to hear I helped, but practice is really the best way to learn.

it would be sad if you'd gone through all that trouble and failed.
