1973 Porsche 917-30 (the car that killed Can-Am)
"In 1973, Porsche and Penske upped the ante. Donohue's 917/30 had streamlined bodywork and a new 5.4-liter, twin turbocharged, flat-12 motor that produced 810 ft-lb of torque and 1100 hp in race trim (and had seen 1500 hp on the dyno). This was the most powerful road racing car until the turbocharged F1 racers of the mid-1980s. Donohue called the 917/30 'a monument to my career as an engineer and driver.' Porsche won all eight races in 1973. Charlie Kemp and George Follmer won the first two races in 917/10Ks before Donohue and the 917/30 got their act together and won six in a row and the championship. This was the first time that anyone had won six straight Can-Am races." "The 917/30 made one last run before being retired to a museum and occasional historic racing duty. On August 9, 1975, Donohue drove it at the Talladega superspeedway to a World Closed Course Speed Record of 221.120 mph. It had run 250 mph on the straights."

This is what happens when some punk-ass kid thinks running a yield sign is a good idea.In the long run though it was probably for the best. The thing was acting up a lot and I just knew the repairs were gonna cost more than I had. The best part was my insurance company gave me $6700 (after deductable) for the car. It booked at $4000. From what I understand they're trying to also get my deductable back from the kids insurance company, but they're trying to say I'm partly liable. Fuckers just don't wanna pay up.

and its going to be right at the 100k mark..

You can checkout the 2004 Viper vs. Vette article from MotorTrend. It's hard to make another car look like ass when your looking at the other cars ass crossing the finish line.

It's possible that the person who covets a Viper SRT-10 wouldn't be interested in a Corvette, however competent it is. And there are Vette Faithful who wouldn't give a Dodge a second look, however fast it is. So for real buyers, this decision may be based upon brand loyalty alone.

Maybe so but at least he owns the car that he loves. While you are busy drooling over cars that you will never be able to afford in your lifetime, he is actually driving the car that he loves. So tell me, who is the bigger loser, the one who is realistic and sets his sights on a nice car he can actually own? Or the loser who drives a POS and drools over $40K plus vehicles that he will never be able to own in his lifetime. Just about anybody can dream of owning a Ferrari, Corvette, ect. but very few people actually drive the cars that they drool over. This is one of the reasons why I like the TT RX-7, it's not a Ferrari but realistically I could own one of these at some point in my life. Another thing to consider is with all the money that guy saved on his Celica, he could invest it in mods that would make sure a V-8 powered vehicle got left in the dust AND he would still have a little cash left over in his pocket. If he has the GTS model, those little 6 speed rockets are nothing to laugh at. Almost no weight and very quick.

On the topic of a celica being fast, its not the GT-S only has 180bhp and has a 0-60 time of 7.8 secs (really bad). Not to mention all the mods in the world will just make it look trashy (its still a toyota).
As for what i drive, i do enjoy my car and no it didnt spend 100k on some ferrari or lambo. I got a BMW 540i, which is by no means a fast car but could still leave you in the dust easily.
Although i would like to sell it and get on of those new Mercedes-Benz cars coimg out ( XLS or somethig weird), but i dont think i can rationalize paying that much even if i took out a loan (75k). My car now was hard to bring myself to buy (got it for 49k, sticker was like 54,999). Kinda make me mad i got it like a year ago and now they are making a new BMW 6-Sereis, but oh well thats what happens when you buy a car.

I belive the 0-60 time on my car is like 6.6 secs (give or take .1). Its probably twice the size a a celica too. Not that i ever could get beat by him, because i dont race i know my car isnt a speed car (he doesnt seem to understand his car isnt fast either) . Its just alot nicer than a toyota.
And if we are going to add stuff to make the car faster i could do that as well but i dont because my car was fine when i bought it (unlike a celica).

I guess that is at the root of the difference here.... and alot can be concluded about a person by a statement like that. I am not here to criticize that ideal; that's just fine if that is the way you look at owning something. It is completely opposite from my personal opinions, but hey, that's life.
I come from a wealthy family. I grew up riding around in cars that you would no doubt drool over, but there was a hint more class about the way it was handled. I would never hear my father name drop the brand of car he drove to illicit admiration, never would I hear him criticize something simply because it was less expensive. As a matter of fact, he always had a love for american muscle cars, despite the fact that he drove luxury cars exclusively throughout the time I grew up. Cars that had vinyl seats, noisy engines, cheap sticker prices, etc.... because he knew that these cars represented the heart of what made the automobile great in the first place, even if it wasn't his style.
The bottom line is respect. People who have truly made it in life on their own through hard work will usually have that. People who want everyone else to think they have made it, never will.

and the guy that says 1.9 second 0-60 isint true.. heres the pics from the motortrend magazine..
mags a little ripped from being in the bathroom for a year and a half.. but you can clearly see what the 0-60 time says..
and the 1/4 mile is 9.24 as tested by motortrend.. and the mag came out in june 2002.. so the testing was probally done months before that.. and LPE dident hit the 8.95 second mark till december...
and all lingenfelter cars ARE street legal.. and infact they have the record for the fastest 1/4 mile run by a street legal car
now about that toe licking...

Also of course i couldnt buy a 50k car outright (i wouldnt even if they could), i am 21 in school and have an apartment to pay for(in the city where rent can be quite high). Soon i will be able to buy a nice car outright but not yet.
And finaly i never came here to brag about my car, i knew people would think i was trying to act all high and mighty so i didnt say what i drove untill YOU ASKED! How can you possibly consider yourself to be acting like an adult after posting comments like that. Plenty of other people here posted they liked BMWs or actually posted pics of them and I have no problem with them. You on the other hand had to come out and show how much better you were than the guy with the Celica because you own a BMW. I can't believe you are actually denying that, because it is clearly written in that comment about how he ONLY spent $20K-$30K on his car. We did ask you about your car since you seemed to think it was so much better than the Celica that Shamo drove. Sorry man, but you brought this crap on yourself. If you had acted mature in the first place and simply posted pics of your car instead of coming out and attacking Shamo for owning a Celica, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Im not silent. I firstly misread it the first time I thought the guy said it was 8.94 seconds for a MILE not quarter thats why I said he had to be going 250 mph +

I realized that after I reread it. So in a way you were right and I was wrong just a common mistake. I thought at first it was a mile so I posted he had to be going 250+ to do that seconds. then after I reread the magazine I realized it. Its just a common mistake. You don't have to be a douche bag about it trying to prove someone wrong.

maybe the fastest STOCK/Factory 0-60 time
still 10x as much as a lingenfelter vette....
and the new vette will probally base somewhere between the normal coupe price and the z06 price, which is 42k-52k, i would expect in the 46-48 area.
