This is (in my mind) a very strange problem, and I have just now had the courage to face the problem and try to fix it
I apologize in advanced if this has been covered before, I have googled and searched the forums to no end, if I looked something over, feel free to let me know.
Now, quite some time ago I was trying to unlock my harddrive (hotswap) So I unplugged the IDE cable to hooked it up to my PC with no results. I was going to attempt to do it again, however, my xbox would not turn on.
Now, I've come to the conclusion that it is not the power supply, because the xbox will turn on when I completely unhook the hard drive.
When trying to resolve this problem I also came across another very strange incident. I was testing the hard drive in another PC to see if possibly the hard drive was corrupted and maybe I needed to wipe it and ready it for an Xbox again. However, when I hookeed the hard drive up to my PC an orange LED began blinking and my PC would not power up. This led me to believe that it is not the IDE Controller that is bad on the Xbox, but I'm not quite sure.
So I'm turning to you guys for some help. If you could give me some assisstance I would greatly appreciate it.
Again, I apologize if I have overlooked something :)
My Regards,

Hotswapping is very dangerous, sounds like the hard drive is corrupted/damaged...
Your gonna have to either get a new xbox or get a modchip and put in a new hard drive.
Il'd wait for a few more people to post suggestions before acting on that though.
