Title: Xbox Is Ticking...
Post by: sicXness on November 10, 2005, 05:40:00 PM
Yeh, when I leave my XBox sitting in game for 15 minutes or so, it starts making a metronome-like ticking noise, it eventually picks up pace, and the game freezes up. I try to power it off, the screen turns off, but I can hear the ticking and the fan continue for a good 5 seconds until they cease...what's wrong?

Possibly be your hard drive going.

You most likely have an old xbox with a bikini seagate hard drive. (the one with the rubber cover over it) they always go out and suck crap and they always click before dieing and it causes the games to freeze up. BACK UP your hard drive while it will still boot so that you can make a new hard drive.  Ive had about 10 xbox's that i fixed with this same problem. a relatively easy fix if you have an extra hard drive laying around to format and stick in your box.

Nope, it's a western digital.
Btw, is there anyway of softmodding, replacing the stock hard drive with a new one and still play on XBL?

You can softmod and then replace the hard drive, but i do not think you will be able to play on live with the new hd if you have already played on live with that xbox before (if your hd # changes they ban you). But i have never actually tried it so i may be wrong.

Well, there is the whole account recovery thing, encase you get a new xbox...or accidentally delete it, so maybe if I put a new HD in and then did account recover...I just don't know if they can recognize that it's not stock.
