Title: Got A Question About Locking A Hdd
Post by: hyawatha15 on October 06, 2005, 06:10:00 PM
When I go to lock the old PC HDD that I made into an Xbox HDD, and error comes up and its says "Error - This drive does not support ATA Security Spec. And then it says its not locked and it doesnt have security enabled. Is the HDD not usable?

If you are just trying to softmod then it is not useable, some drives are just not lockable, they will work fine in a chipped xbox though.

Hi, I just tried locking my hard drive today, It said Operation succesful (or something like that I cant remember). Then I wrote unlockhd -a and it said "Error - HD is not locked!" so I tried to lock it again (lockhd -a) and then reunlock, still the same error so I tried this a few times and eventually when I goto lock it now it says "Error Security Enabled - Disable It."

By the way this is for a softmod, using xboxhdm 1.9, hdd set to primary master and cd drive set to primary slave. Oh and I don't have a floppy drive so I tried locking it through option 4 from the xboxhdm disc, I think it's linux locking/unlocking utilities.

I did a search and this and another are the most relevant, so please don't tell me to search.

Is there anything saying that the hdd is locked or unlocked? Like in sys info in xbmc?

The HDD will not support locking, so the only chance in hell you are going to use it is to chip your box, fork out $$$, or just sucker with a stock!

You confused me about the sys info thing? I've formatted the hard drive through  xboxhdm on the computer.

So there is absolutely no way to get the drive locked.. also i have the exact same drive with a black casing (this one has silver) it's the same model and everything, could that possibly work? Thanks. Also the first time I tried to lock the drive it said master password set to XBOXSCENE.

sys info - System information.

The HDD will work when launching EvoX or similar dashboards, but the xbox will not boot at all while getting to the M$ dash, it'll just cough up error 12. The black hdd may work, as it sounds like a stock retail hdd. If you use xhdm or config magic it will tell you whether the drive supports locking or not. Is the black casing rubbery?

Its always best to try a hdd to see if it works...

So let me get this straight, I can use it in my softmodded xbox when launching to evox, but not m$dash? Cause thats great :), I never use the normal dash and If i needed it i could just throw the stock drive back in there. Umm, I've looked in heaps of places and nearly everyone except one person has reported a WD1200BB with 2mb cache locking for them. But most of them use config magic, how do I work that?

I'll assume you have ConfigMagic already copied to the HDD.

At the bottom of the screen, there will be a box with a caption stating whether the drive will lock or not. it will also the show the hdd password.

In the main menu on the left, select HDD lock and ConfigMagic will automatically lock the drive and set the master unlock password to 'TEAMASSEMBLY'. then you should be done.

If you are not bothered with using the M$ Dash, don't bother.

Last nite I tried to relock the hard drive through xboxhdm, It gave me this error.
HDD is locked please unlock it first, so I thought yay, threw it in my xbox and booted up to error 06 (which correct me if I'm wrong is the hard drive not locked error) so I put it back in my computer and tried to unlock it, i tpyed "xboxhd" to goto the options and it said options 1-6 were disabled. I couldn't unlock or lock it, unlocking came up with no errors or confirmation, locking still said "Hard drive is locked, unlock it first."

BTW i've softmodded using krayzie's ndure, that means its running the normal xbox bios and will try to unlock it first right? Therefore It doesn't matter if I'm using the normal m$ dash or not, right, cause it gave me that error 06?

This hard drive is a wd1200bb, the one in my computer is a wd1200jb.

I'm stuck, what should I do. I can't run config magic because i cant get to the evox dash due to the error 06.  :(

Sorry to go on, but I'd like to sort this out.

P.S. The VERY first time I tried to lock it and it said locked, it also set master password set to xboxscene. Too bad when i tried to unlock it said not locked.

Well i really dont know what is wrong now. At the moment, the hard-drive just wont lock, which sacrafices the use of M$ Dash.

Unlocking the drive only lets you take the hdd out of the xbox and can be re-used in a pc or whatever. So whether the drive will lock or not, it doesn't matter; but i think there are some problems about saving to the hdd during play(?)

I think the only solution to the problem is to buy a cheap mod-chip and then lock it via that, if you cant boot to evox cos u are using a 'retail' bios then theres no chance of the xbox working anytime soon. Soz mate.

Not true, if you are using the retail bios, it wil check the hdd is locked and other system checks (ie the dvd drive), so if it is throwing error 6 (cannot unlock hdd - not locked) it will not boot. As i said above, the only solution to your problem is to buy a cheap modchip - and if you can, format the hdd before installing the modchip to get rid of the softmod files.

About the bios thing, thats what I meant, it tries to unlock it and waits for the hard drive to say its unlocked, but it doesnt so the xbox gives error 06 because it thinks the hard drive is stuffed or missing.

If I borrowed my friends modded xbox, could configmagic do anything that xboxhdm cant?

You can only lock the drive if your friends xbox has the same eeprom as yours. If you lock the drive in xbox 2 and put it in xbox 1 it will be unable to unlock the drive as it doesn't have the unlock password (as it's stored in the eeprom).

Unless you have backed-up earlier, you wont have the 'eeprom.bin' so it most likely wont work.

But like before, if its an old hdd, then it probably wont lock as hdd locking is a relatively new security measure, and wont be incorporated into older drives.

Oh, configmagic does less than what xbhdm can do, except for on-the-fly eeprom editing. So your still best using xbhdm, but I really cannot think of what else there is to, but you could try and put evoxdash.xbe and evox.ini into the old drive, whilst it's connected to a PC, keep the drive unlocked then put it back in to your xbox and then *hopefully* it will boot straight to EvoX dash.

Sorry, reading this again, i wrote my sentence wrong:

Put your HD in your mates chipped xbox, then you could try and put evoxdash.xbe and evox.ini via ftp into the drive, whilst it's connected to a PC, keep the drive unlocked then put it back in to your xbox and then *hopefully* it will boot straight to EvoX dash.

Hope it makes more sense now  :)

K thanks. But instead of using my mates xbox, could I just xboxhdm and then make a new xboxhdm linux cd thing and get all the files from my stock hdd and use that?

Yes you can, but in order for xbhdm to make an xbox hdd, it needs to format c and e drives (as well as f and g if supported), so you will lose all your gamesaves, music and various evox skins you may have.

If you want to keep the files, then use your mates xbox and ftp the files as usual.

So it really boils down to:

1. Use Xbhdm
Pros: Get a clean drive with the files automatically copied
Cons: Lose all your files

2. Use mates xbox
Pros: Ftp evox files into drive without formatting
Cons: The hassle

The choice is all yours my friend! :D

Wrong. Softmods require a locked HD to do anything, as the original BIOS is loaded on startup, which requires the HD to be locked. Then, NKPatcher or PBL is loaded to allow you to run unsigned code.

Oh crapper soz mate completely bummed up unsure.gif

If you want to get your mates hdd working, it needs to be locked with a password that your xbox recognises, eg the retail hdd. If your mate can get a copy of your eeprom, then lock the drive using his eeprom, you can then transfer it into your xbox.

Once again, sorry.

Sorry can't edit for some reason.

I just tried "partition table doctor 3.0" and it says the drive isn't accessible. So i booted up xboxhdm. It said the drive was locked and options 1-5 were disabled. I tried unlocking and it didnt give me the status. I tried locking and it said drive is locked, unlock first.

What is going on? I've put it into my xbox again and i still get error 6?? I really would like to use this for either my computer or xbox.
