Title: Help Shecky's Super Server
Post by: SHECKY25 on February 02, 2004, 11:26:00 AM
What’s up fellow gamers and hackers. My name is Shecky and I would like to announce that the past week I have been running a dedicated server under the Xtag “SHECKY25”. It has not been on 24/7 but I will try to keep it up as long as possible. I am writing because I have some questions about my set up and R6.

I am running off a cable connection and my numbers are higher then what is expected for a cable connection. My speed tests are clocked at best at 3/1 Mbit. Which is almost 4 times higher then what my isp provider advertises. I don’t understand why nor am I about to question  my provider about this circumstance. So as long as I have these speeds I will put them to go use.

   The questions I have are:

1.   What should my settings be for “enable packet caching”
2.   Does the maps loop or will I have to restart
3.   Can I set a limit for the ping of the players so if the exceed they will be kicked
4.   What maps do you guys want to see
5.   The settings you guys want on R6

When testing and talking to the players I noticed that I max out around 10-12 players when the pings are reasonable, but I am not on it all the time so any feedback would be great. I also set xlink’s max players to be 16 just in case people forget to sign out.

I am going to be trying to get my friends into the scene too, but I still need to mod up there boxes. There are a total of 6 guys I am gathering up.  This should be done by the end of the week and hopefully I can start getting my team together. They are not big time gamers so we will see if they get into it or not. I will be putting their names up soon so you guys can respect them in my server and help guide them along. Also you might occasionally play against my girlfriend which some of you already have and she isn’t to shabby at the game so keep your guard up. I also am still learning so inform me to things such like using .50 calibers is a no-no and nobody likes sharpshooter.

Can’t think of anything else to add right now, but please give me feedback or correct anything that I am saying or doing wrong because I sure is hell don’t know everything. Also, I can’t say how long I will be doing this and my computer isn’t solely used for serving games so it won’t be up all the time. I also like to play links 2004 so I will shut it down occasionally to play other games too.

Okay, thanks for the help

Shecky: Thanks for your efforts, as an avid xlink user, I truly appreciate what you are doing.

I will answer some of this, but some of it is a matter of opinion.

1.I don't know.
2.You can add maps to the list when you setup the server, the list does not loop.  Ten rounds is good for a map.
3.no, but it would be cool.
4.all of them.
5.no launchers, no 50cal.rifle, Friendly fire on, punish off, thermals off, 10player games, 5 min. rounds

I like sharpshooter, but you are right, most don't.

6 guys equals clan>bring it on

thanks

Sheck,

Thanks man - ure server will b gratefully received smile.gif

As to youre questions, i can answer 1 and 3:

1.) Ignore the cache - it is only useful in EXTREMELY specific circumstances - RS3 does not require it.

3.) It's a planned feature for Arena Operators in Kai 0007

If possible, soon, im gonna start pushing stuff over to Kai - it just provides us all with a massively more flexible community gaming structure - the primary driving factor in its design smile.gif

I'll keep y'all uptodate - but im thinking about createing Arena for the dedicated server crew pretty soon..

Well, I have been ruining into a couple of problems with both of my xbox’s. On one of them it sometimes will hang on the loading screen right after I pick the maps I want to run.  On the other one during game play it will come up with a “dirty disk” error and I can only assume this happens doing the loading of the map when it switches maps. I don’t know because I am either at school all day or at work and I don’t see it happen.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I will try my best to keep it up and ruining. Hey flat235, if you get that room up and going on Kai I will move over because I keep hearing how awesome Kai is. Also if it is planned to drop high pingers then that will be nice too. I am sure if the dedicated servers switch over the R6 people will go too.

Heet, was there that much lag with only 3 people. That doesn’t sound to reassuring. I am hoping it was because my girlfriend was maybe online with a combination of the other people having high pings….. we will see.

And thanks again guys…..

Thanks for the effort sheck, your girl really likes that nade launcher huh?  biggrin.gif

Anyway, most people leave because A there's no one there B there are too many people and it's lagging.

Sharpshooter is corny, shit I got my record score of 29 kills on your server.  I could get 29 kills all day and still hate sharpshooter.  If you know the spawn areas you can win every time.

Try limiting it to 4on4 games (8 people Team Survival), I think you will get a much better response.

Friendly fire should be left on at least so when someone is caught cheating the other playes can go to his/her side and make a point by team killing them.  There are lots of cheaters that go into your server and true's server, the reason is because everyone usually tries to join one of our severs(XR8D) and if we catch them cheating or just being an ass we kick them, so you usaully wind up with our leftovers.

Can't think of anything else, I'm being shot at, gotta go!

Thanks!

I tested tha maplist loop thing and it's NOT true that the maplist will run out. The list will keep repeating.

llsevenll does have a point here and the cheating and being an ass thing will be the worst enemies of a dedicated server. I hope team Xlink get's Kai done very fast so it will be possible to run the xlink engine on the server and use clients to control the xlink connection. Using this it will be possilbe to have multiple admins who can ban/kick players. That way it will be much easier to keep control over the server.

I also noticed that most of the time it's not the connection that's causing lag, but it's the CPU of the pc that's maintaining the Xlink connection or the pc used by the client. By testing a bit with some configs I came up with the following 'fist rule' (dunno if that's correct english, if not forgive me, I'm dutch :P):

No. of players + 1 * 100MHz <= CPU freq

Ofcourse this all depends on what CPU you're using. My Duron 1200 gives me roughly the same performance as my 1GHz Thunderbird. When playing with more then 8 players TRUE-is starts to lag if I use my 1200 Duron. I'm currently in necociation for an AMD XP 1700+ to power my xlink server. As soon as the CPU upgrade is done I should be able to host a 12-14 player server, since my bandwidth isn't the limiting factor.

So keep that in mind when starting a dedicated server.

I also noticed that my xbox shuts down after a few hours of hosting the server. I wonder if that's because of the heat or some other problem. Is there anybody experiencing the same?

Wow, thanks for all the help guys!

First to Heet, I am glad to hear I wasn’t lagging with 6 people connect.  When watching the server and listening to complaints I see lag when someone with a really high ping joins up and wont leave.  And just one really high ping can screw things up really bad, and to add to things recently the kick command will not respond. I don’t know if this is on my side or the xlink side.  When I first started serving I was able to kick now I cant.

Secondly to ||seven||, yes you are correct my girl loves the nad laucher ( no sexual pun intended…… well …..maybe a little) biggrin.gif . She doesn’t have the best abilities to aim so she can just launch a nad and have a better chance for a kill. ….. I wish there was a way to rotate team survival with a couple of sharpshooter rounds in there to mix it up a tad. I also notice more people able to connect without lag when it’s on sharpshooter. I guess its because there is less talk during the rounds… I don’t know. I will enable team kill on the settings. Could someone define “cheating” on R6? I read somewhere there was a hack or something. So, is that what you are referring to as “cheating”.

Thirdly to Froggie, I am running a AMD XP 2100 with 512 memory. I also noticed my xbox turning off after about 5-8 hours. If it is due to over heating I am going to bump up my fan speed to see if that changes anything. I always thought it was turning of because of my puppy fighting with it. I have it on the floor because my cat five cable is only 2 feet long and my router is on the floor. I will be getting a longer cable form work today so my pup wont be wrestling with my xbox anymore. I think he is more of a gamecube kinda guy.

Lastly, I think I figured out my loading problem. (long story). I have two xbox’s lets just call them box A and box B. Box A originally had R6 on the hard drive and then I ftp R6 from A to xbox B. So I then started to server off of xbox A, But I ran into the problem of “dirty disk error” with xbox A. SO I decided to run the game off of xbox B but I figured it wont be any different because it is the same exact copy so it will do the same. BUT it didn’t, it ran fine for 8 hours plus with out ever giving me any “dirty disk error” message and it has ruining for over a week. BUT what xbox B does is it will not load from after selecting the map rotation screen. I will have to try over 10 times before it will finally load. I kept wondering why it is such different problems with the same copy of R6?? I came to the conclusion it was due to the Bios because they are different on each box. Box A has the Xecuter 47something. Box B has the newest Bios with the xbox live disable feature , and every time I start R6 the “cannot connect to live” error come up, which is good because that’s what’s it is suppose to do. I came to the conclusion when R6 figures that it cannot connect to live it won’t be able to connect to system link. SO I decided to disconnect my cat 5 when I boot up R6 then connect it when I start me dedicated server. It works perfectly fine now. So any one with the same problem can do the same thing to fix it. Also a  side note, I have noticed it hanging at the first loading screen too when I have it connected, so disconnected the cat 5  if this happens to you too.

Thanks again guys

Hey, I haven't tought about that autopower off thing. That might be it.
I'll be running my own server tonight. It's laying open on the floor with a 92mm fan on the cpu heatsink so I'll have a hard time sleeping tonight :P
Anyway, if it still shuts down tonight I'm gonne try the auto power down setting.  <

Tonight was the first time I actually sat down and played a few games on my server. I was astonished on the behavior of some of the individuals that will stay unnamed. The environment I would prefer my server to be is one that is open to the public and welcomes all levels of gaming and from different ethnic backgrounds. There was countless bashing of individuals who were either newbies and/or spoke with an accent. I will not tolerate ignorance on my server. Trash talking is more than welcome if and only if both parties know that it is done with humor and good intentions.  Just because your inside your own home where you usually behave as you please doesn’t give you the power to come into my server and act like the D I C K head you are.

Okay, I am almost done hooking up my friends with their modded xbox's and showing them how to navigate through xlink. Hopefully they will find R6 as much fun as I do. But, I think they might be more into the sports titles. If you guys do see them in my server please help them out and let them win a couple of times. All but one will be getting mics soon so they will be able to talk. Here are their xlink xtags.

1. Red               aka (redman)
2. DROD
3. YakAttacK
4. cmv
5. Quagmire
6. PoopyPatrol    aka satan
7. DIVA             (my girlfriend)

If all goes well this might be the start of my team. Which we would really suck, but suck together.

bingojohn:  Don't get discouraged.  This is a great online game and xlink is a great place to play.  Unfortunately there are some turds that come and go.  If you want to practice up, try running through the missions and terrorist hunts, they diffinitly help the reflexes.  However, there is nothing like competing against real people.
A couple things you need to know are, if you don't already.....
1.  Don't camp too much.  Most people hate that and it's usually noobs that do it.
2.  Don't use the 50cal. rifle
3.  Don't use grenade launchers, even if they are enabled, unless everyone discusses it first.
4.  You're less likely to be picked on, if you have a headset.
5.  Don't cheat.  Don't mess with any of that hacking shit for online play.  If you need to hack, do it on the single player games.
6.  I am with the XR group and you are welcome to play in any of our open games anytime.  We smoke'n'joke and talk alot of trash, but we are truly in it for the fun and comradery we get out of it.

Well said boxo,
I don't know why they would be shooting him just cause he doesn't have a mic, thats odd.  I didn't have a mic for quite some time and got teased alot about it, I think mainly cause I was killing everyone and they wanted to know I was hearing all their trash talk.  In any case this is the hottest game around, don't stop playing it because a few cases of arrested developent find it funny playing "shoot the noob".
