Title: Connection Drops
Post by: Golden Maven on January 21, 2004, 06:03:00 AM
Here's my problem, while playing Top Spin online using either XLink or XBConnect, my connection drops at random during gameplay. The strange thing is, everything seems normal on the computer after I get dropped frrom a game. The connection still appears to be on and the program is still running. However, the connection doesn't work at all, I can no longer surf the internet or whatever else that requires an internet connection. At that point, I can disconnect/reconnect, but the connection still won't work. The only remedy is rebooting the computer.

Would anyone know what causes this? I hardly lag during gameplay if playing with someone with a decent ping. By the way, I don't know if this problem is exclusive to Top Spin, I haven't tried any other game online yet. I'm pretty sure it would be the same with any XBox game using these tunneling software.

I have exactly same problem and it seems that lot of people does too.

The problem started about month ago. First I played XBC with no problems about a year. Then I installed X-link and everything was fine. Suddenly when I started to play RS3 the problem occurred. First everything was fine, exept that almost everytime (i played with my friend)  mine or my friends connection was lost when loading a game, but one xbox-reboot and everything was fine. But one time in the same situation my whole internet connection froze and i had to reboot computer. After that it was same thing everytime, no matter if it was XBC or X-link. When I started XBC or X-link, the connection lasted about a minute and then the internet connection was lost and there was nothing to do exept reboot computer. I tried to install WinPCap 3.01 Alpha but it didn't helped. I tried different kind of settings but with no luck. Everytime that one minute or so and thats it. So i re-installed my windows xp.

After that I decided install only XBC for start and test with it. Everything worked properly and I played RS3 with my friend about 10 times and he hosted everytime. Today I decided to host and when i loaded the game, my internet connection failed. So we tried that he hosts but with no luck. Now I have the same problem all over again. Does anyone have any ideas because what I have read, quite many have the same problem and it is really annoying because it freezes the whole netgaming :(

I have now XBC and WinPcap 3.0 installed. So its the same problem everytime, no matter what tunneling program, after about one minute the internet connection is lost.

Oh yes and my net setting is two NICs and crossover cable. I hope someone can atleast try to solve this problem with me and the others. I can give more details if needed.

EDIT: Example here guy seems to have a same problem.

I'll try using another computer as the host and see how it goes... That should help me isolate the problem.

By the way, are you running a software firewall?

Yes I use software firewall (Sygate Personal).

Now I got it work again. I removed WinPcap 3.0 and installed version 3.01 Alpha. Strange bacause last time when I had this trouble (before I re-installed XP as I told in previous post) this didn't help.

Does anyone (smarter smile.gif) know, could chat-program Trillian (www.trillian.cc) cause any trouble with tunneling software. I have it going all the time in the backround, but now when I got XBC working, I closed it before starting XBC. Maybe I have to test more what could cause this problem.

As you all might notice from my text, English is not my mother tongue wink.gif

I got to play a few games of halo, but mostly lose connection.
I wanted to play RS3 but it seems very hard to get into a game if you go into xlink stag (I dont have any friends that go on)  I did get into one game of RS3 but it froze on the first screen then lost connection.  WTF!  I really wanted to try out my headset, but so far I havent been able to get into a game.

Im using RC2 with the update, everything is working fine. I use a dlink router, all ports forewarded, using original game dvd.  Any ideas??
Guess I will just wait for KAI. to completly migrate.

I will be trying some more this weekend!

I will not bump my original post but am having the same problems as described above.

Bingo! So am I. Sygate might just be causing the problem. I'll try removing it and see how it goes.

I was just snooping around on the WinPcap site and found two FAQ entries that might describe my problem(s).

Can I use WinPcap on a PPP connection?

A: We have tested WinPcap on PPP connections under Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME. In Windows 95, due to a bug in NDIS, WinPcap sometimes resets the PPP connection. In Windows 98/ME this bug appears to be corrected, and WinPcap seems to receive correctly, however it is not able to send packets. Under Windows NT/2000/XP there are problems with the binding process, that prevent a protocol driver from working properly on the WAN adapter. The problem is caused by the PPP driver of WinNTx, ndiswan, that doesn't provide a standard interface to capture.

Problem no.1 - I am using a PPPoE based connection

Does WinPcap work with firewalls?

A: We got several reports saying that WinPcap does not work well if a firewall is installed on the same machine as WinPcap. We do not plan to solve this problem soon; a remedy consists in disabling (temporarily) the firewall functions.

That doesn't sound very promising either. Running a Windows XP system without any form of protection is a big no-no. I'm sure everyone here would agree with me on that. I hope WinPcap at least works with XP's built-in firewall.

Update - On another computer that was also running Sygate, I uninstalled Sygate, turned on XP's Firewall, installed RC2 + WinPcap 3.0 and I am happy to report that it works. I played two full games without getting dropped. It was a little jerky though, the controls didn't feel as responsive as they should.

Quick Question - Does it matter how fast the computer hosting is? It is rather slow by today's standards - 800Mhz Duron with 512MB of RAM. That should be fine, right?
