Title: Blueyonder Telewest Broadband Uk Area
Post by: mkjones on January 14, 2004, 02:25:00 AM
I have a Blueyonder Telewest Broadband cable connection in the UK, its a 521k download speed but the upload is a shocking 14k I belive.

Just wonderd if anyone out there is on this connection and how well it works with Xlink?

Cheers     <

I think you're a little confused... Sounds like you're on a 512/128 connection.

This means,

512 kbps (kilobits per second), which is roughly 51.2 KB/s (kilobytes per second).

You upload speed of 128 kbps results in roughly 12.8 KB/s.

It's not "shocking" as such, but it is quite low. You will have problems with high bandwidth requiring games (Halo, Brute Force) etc, when you have a certain number of people / XBoxes connected.

Run something like Tony Hawks 4, and you'll have no trouble at all. Just try to get people as close to you as possible...  <

you have 512kbit up and 128kbit down. (blueyonder dont advertive the up speed for this service and when i asked the question to there help desk they did not understand)

I have the same connection speed as you and use the same ISP.

I dont have any problems at all, and have played against people all over the world.

I used to have AOL broardband and i was not very happy with the service.

As TD it depends on the game, but i have played top-spin agaist people in Canada with no lag what so ever.

I am planning on upgrading to 1meg connection that will give me 256kbit up

I have been playing online LAN games max of 4 xbox's on my LAN so far, going to get a few friends round to take it up to 7

Do you think my connection can handle it?

yeh I have the 1/2mb service and they dont advertize the uprate, all I know is I never get anymore than 14k when I open an FTP or send a file..

Sounds like it should work great, shame about Halo, thats what I wanted to play!

yep 14k is what i get for upload as well.
you are on the same service as me and i have confirmed that I have a 128kbit up-speed.

Halo should work ok, just if you are playing someone and you have a slow ping then expect some lag, if you play someone in Europe you can expect to see a ping of ~30ms - ~90ms  if you get this kind of ping you should have a lag free game.

also make sure you close down any file sharing programs, like kazaa.

other messenger programs like msn messenger should be ok to keep running.

plus getting a program like ad aware to check for spy an ad-ware as this can effect your bandwith.  <
