| No, it's the whole EEPROM. If it wasn't, then there would be little discussion about getting a new EEPROM. |
thanks, just read that on another post.
So the live ID is related to the checksum of the eeprom. Now what would happen if I need to use the same live id on different box ? Like the old one is broken ? Can I use the same live id on two boxes(not at the same time)?
Yes, two Xboxes can have the same EEPROM, as long as they don't sign on to Live when the other one is already on Live.
so what would be the difference in I change something in the eeprom, wipe out the live id in it and redo it. This seems to be no difference in using someone else eeprom ?
Again, you have to change the whole EEPROM, not just one part. Read the tutorial in the pinned topics to learn how to flash your EEPROM with someone else's

I have some idea of how to replace the eeprom, afterall it is just a 256 bytes thing through the i2c bus.
What I don't understand is though why can't I just change part of the eeprom. How would MS know that it is the same machine if the eeprom content is different ? I see 3 unique info in the eeprom, the serial number, the MAC number and the HDD key. The rest are just user changeable stuff and they are basically common like video format, game region etc..
So if I take someone else's eeprom, the above three info would be different and that is about it. Why not I change them myself ?

because it would be nearly impossible to change the right part to make it a valid eeprom
its not "all values valid until banned"
its "only these values are valid" (else are banned, or just not valid to begin with)
you'd have to guess to make it a valid eeprom of another existing xbox, hence its easier to just replace it with one from another valid unbanned xbox
