Title: Suddenly, Can't Get Game To Load
Post by: dirtyzachattack on March 31, 2005, 05:36:00 PM
ok - really need some help here as I am stumped.
i am an xbox live veteran. i have my xbox modded (executer2, evolutionx dashboard), and have no problems playing other games on my xbox - regular games and copied games.... (for example, mvp baseball 2005 - i can play it online with no problems)
however, as of late, halo 2 is not working at all. i am getting "dirty disc errors"... so here i what i have tried so far - - multiple copies of halo 2 - i replaced the dvd drive from the phillips drive to the samsung drive - i have deleted the temporary files (E:\) - i have copied the game to the hard drive, and when i try and run it, it says "dirty disc error" (however, no disc is in the drive)
all of these errors have occured with multiple copies of the game, and with 2 different drives.. any help would be amazing.
IM me if you want - zachattackac

i hope when u said u clear the temp cache E, u really mean X Y and Z.
i did for all four- was i not supposed to? i was told in another forum i posted to try deleteing the contents in the e:\cache folder (i believe) as well as x y and z... so i have cleared all of them.. here is the reply to my orginal post in another forum.
- First thing to try is to delete all of the files in the CACHE directory on the E: drive.

I've had this happen as well, my symptoms were:
I would try to initiate a mulitplayer game or resume a singel player campaign, and it would attempt to load for an inordinate amount of time--ultimately resulting in a "dirty disk" error.
Afterwards, it would immediately give the error upon attempting to load any gametype.
I have moved the files off my box, deleted, re-FTPed, etc--all to no avail.
What has worked for me--Copy a clean version of the came over, and reboot the box. Launch Halo 2, then go to campaign. Start a new game (whichever level), and just wait. It will take a while. You will have cause for wonder and concern, but just be patient. Eventually, it will load. You can then save and close.
Now, in multiplayer, you should be able to connect to a game (via system link, kai, xbc) or initiate your own, only this time the map should load.
Good luck--I know this doesn't help for an explaination... but it may help you work around it.

my brothers xbox(which isnt at all modded) does the same with halo2. i tried 4 different copies and only one of them worked and it still took around 4minutes to load a MP map <

My Halo 2 does the same thing sometimes. If I haven't played Halo 2 in awhile, then I do, it will take forever to play a multiplayer map. After the countdown, it says "Waiting for everyone to load the map" It takes like 4 minutes (same as HamSandwich). It is really annoying when I want to play right away. All the while, my hard drive sounds like it is in a Halo 2 firefight itself. (Dual-Weilding SMGs everywhere!) It must have something to do with the decompression of the maps or something, because once I finally do start, I can quit the game and play a different map in less than 20 seconds.
Very Puzzling ? ? :uhh: <

Just halo 2? If so, it must be a sign that you need to stop wasting your live away with online gaming. The first step is admitting you have an addiction.
Funny, but too true.

yea - it is very frustrating...
i am currently using my roomates xbox to play on live, but when he moves out in a month, i would really like to play with my xbox online as opposed to having to buy a whole new x-box.
and yes, its just halo2 that does this... and it works perfect on my roomates un-modded xbox.
no one has any ideas, eh? <

to follow up on this, i found out the hard drive in my modded xbox was going bad. replaced the drive, put the game in, and no problem. copied the game, and no problem..
so if you are getting dirty disc errors even after you copied the game, you may want to look at replacing the hard drive. <

Hmmm, I was just about to stay you have a duff HD ;) It usually fails in the X, Y, Z cache areas on the disk as they are the most used, hence games take so long to load.
I didn't notice how old your original post was.
Cheers anyway  <

Yeah, I got my Xbox way back in November 2001. It's already showing signs of aging.
-DVD Drive. When I insert a DVD into it and close it, the DVD grinds against the tray, making a bone-crushing sound. -Hard Drive. I never play a game from the HDD unless I know it's caches are on there. If I play from the HDD, it takes 10 minutes to load a H2 map, and in DOOM³, I can't skip the intro scenes because it's loading. -FRAGs (Flashing Red and Green). My mod chip will get loose and then I'll have to fix it, usually by picking my Xbox an inch off the ground and then dropping it. This happens maybe once a month.
Thank God Xbox 360 is coming out soon...
