Title: Slim 4gb Memory Module Fault...
Post by: Aldanga on June 24, 2013, 01:00:00 PM
If you want to get down and dirty, you might be able to use info gleaned from pictures here and follow some traces to figure out the pins on the board. Once you've figured out the points, you could, theoretically, remove the module and connect a USB plug to the memory board or header pins and connect it to your PC to see if the memory is bad or just somehow corrupted and zero out the memory.

You might be able to short it and erase the memory module, but you'd need a full pinout of the memory chip rather than a USB plug. I couldn't fine one in a short Google search, though I wouldn't be surprised if one exists.

IPB Image

On the module only J1 - J4 are used by the look of it.

Module uses 3.3V, USB lead will supply 5V. Suck it and see or stick a pot on it to get nearer 3.3V?

Got DATA + and - back to front on the pic, J3 is DATA-, J4 is DATA+.

I would not push 5v into it. Lower the voltage as close to 3.3v as you can.

3.3V doesnt work as it drops to 1.21 on the module, so went for the 5V instead and it works in that windows detects the device but doesnt know what it is, so I swapped the DATA- and + in case they were wrong and no difference.

Module is duff would be my guess. I was hoping windows would know what it was and be able to format it for reuse.

While I think you're probably right about the memory being bad, depending upon which controller the card uses, it could be a driver issue. I don't know if trying to access the device via Linux to see if you can glean some data from it would be worth your time, but it's a thought.
