Title: Slim Wont Power On!
Post by: wilgo45 on May 18, 2013, 02:00:00 AM
Ok - party means beer or mixed drinks. The liquid later congealed.
But the moment the liquid made contact with all the right points, I'm sure it facilitated a short. Maybe even multiple shorts.
Worse case scenario would be the primary chip - the Cpu/Gpu - might have gotten trashed. With shorts sustained in its architecture. That's just a could be ... don't know for certain that happened.
First place to start. Do more cleaning. Use 91% isopropyl alcohol. Then maybe some acetone in key areas. MEK can be used too. But acetone would be safer on you personally. Use Q tips and blot clothes.
Next place - would be to check all the Standby voltages. The 5v, the 3.3, the 1.8
If you have no experience working on electronics ... or no exp in soldering and surface mount soldering ... then this is going to be a daunting task for you.
There are a variety of things to check and test in this scenario. You most likely have some board components knocked down.
Oh - another thing came to mind. Remove the board from the cage if you already hadn't. Liquid or dried liquid might still be conducting a short to ground on the cage.
And to reiterate - to repair ... the right knowledge and tools will be necessary. A 25 watt soldering iron will not cut it for this job.
So let me know your skill level
And I can also direct you to my repair service thread ... if you might want my help personally

I second what wilgo said.. plus i vouch for his services. Could even be some liquids under the gpu..
BTw.. when he said to use the acetone.. or the methyl ethyl ketone... he meant on a q tip.. just so you know.. i use acetone to make abs plastic putty.. melts the plastic slowly in large amounts.. so dont be a noob and pour it on..

The Xbox was off at the time of the spill but starting it with the stuff on it probably did not do to much good for it.
Where would i go about checking the voltages?
And i would say im a 7/10 at soldering.

Even when the 360 is not turned on. It is slightly powered. All the Standby voltages active. So those devices could be centered in the possible shorts.
There are online diagrams of where voltages are present. Both Phat and Slim. This very site might have a few. Just search .... google or whatever.
As I said before, you're going to need to check the various Standby's. The Slim has a few more voltage readouts than the Phat. Check for 5 , 3.3 , 1.8 , and maybe a few others.
Things that could have been knocked out. 3.3 power reg, Controller IC's, mosfets, pnp transistors, 0 ohm resistors
On doing your own work. Use a nice gel flux. Go buy it if you have to. Could be the real factor in success or utter failure. Pre-tin joints with leaded solder. Will aid in device removal and pad preservation.
And know - not every device can be worked with soldering iron. You might need a Hot Air tool ... Not A Heat Gun ... a Hot Air Tool
What do you have for equipment?

I said NOT a Heat Gun. Heat Guns equal VERY BAD. I said Hot Air tool ... there's a huge difference
