I used to use acetone. No noticeable effects. You're good to go. I used that and isopropyl alcohol. Hell I've also used laquer thinner to clean the Heat sink compound off the cpu and gpu

I use MEK and IPA

If you want to do good job cleaning your mainboard properly, go to your local electronics shop and take a special cleaner for electronics. I pay around 7 euro for 200ml. But the point is, that when you use it u are sure it will clean the solderings and you will not spend much of it... so at the end of the day it costs the same with acetone but u do better and professional work.

I rather use iso alcohol rather than acetone..
acetone is a bit harsh really and tends to bleach stuff at the least, but i have used it with no bad side effects.

acetone and mek are industrial solvents. they do 2 things very well, clean stuff with chemicals on them, and cause cancer. artic clean on the other hand only does one thing well, clean chemicals off of stuff. take your pick. its also nice to get done working and have a room that smell like oranges instead of a meth lab.
