Title: Straight Lite-on 83850c V1 Dvd Replacement [all Original Fw And Same M
Post by: ArcticUK on May 13, 2010, 05:47:00 AM
Would really appreciate any help. I have spent the last couple of nights reading through various forums and now I’m just becoming more confused (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) So rather than screw up what I am trying to do I thought I would ask first. Wasn't sure whether to put this in the hacking section or here sorry. I guessed I wasn't really trying to mod my system just fix the hardware so ask here. If it is wrong please let me know and I will move it if i can! (Thanks)

Background Info:

Ok I have an Xbox360 which is not under warranty as I took it out of its case and put it into a Lian Li XB-01B to get rid of the noise (which it has) and generally keep the system running cooler.

Now 4 months from new and the DVD stopped reading MW2 when the new maps came out (possibly pure coincidence in timing, this was happening weeks after their map pack fix). I kept getting the put in a DVD or a message similar to that when it tried loading the maps (odd thing was the game was installed to the HD). So I removed the new maps and then tried playing again which worked for a while, but now it has started happening on the old maps as well. So I guess it is related to the DVD player, or at least that is now what I am going to try and rule out first by changing it. The game disc itself works fine in my other elite, which has just gone back to M$ with the 3 RROD! Arggghh. Yep 2 Xboxes and both faulty (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Suspected faulty DVD Drive specs:

Lite-on DG-16D2S-09C
H/W Ver: AOA2
F/W Ver: 83850C
Manufactured: July 2009

Looking inside it appears to be the V1 83850C and not V2 if I am meant to just check the label on the back of the PCB.

Replacement DVD Drive:

As I was purely looking to do a straight swap I.E all original firmware’s (I have no desire to go down the copied DVD route let alone the banned from Xbox Live scenario) I sourced an identical new drive.

Took delivery today and as luck has it everything matches (as in the Model, HW and FW etc), even the Manufactured date, but that bit was a fluke and probably not so important!

My options:

1) Take the PCB out of the suspected faulty DVD drive and put into the new one and in theory I am ready to go. But that still leaves the small chance that the PCB might have been playing up, I don’t know. (So my idea is to replace the whole damn thing!) Also if I take this easier option I will never learn how to carry out option 2 below.

2) Not as easy as option 1, but my preferred option as I would prefer to replace the whole drive is to take my DVD Key and inject it into the firmware of the new drive. ** This is where I need help/advice please (see next section!) **

My questions (finally!): (Sorry for going on, I just hopped giving as much info as possible might help solve this for others in the future).

1) If I’m just taking the DVD Key from the faulty drive and injecting it into the new drive I guess there is no spoofing involved? This from what I understand it one of the reasons for getting banned on XBL?

2) Is spoofing: (I.E, it’s my understanding it is required to do each of the following)

a. Using a different drive altogether compared to the original in which case iXtreme FW has to used?
b. Using iXtreme FW on the very same original drive just to enable playing of backups?

3) Pretty much all of the instructions I have come across relate to using the IXtreme FW at some stage which is obviously NOT what I am not looking to do (or at least I don’t think I have to given what I am trying to achieve i.e. A straight repair with another identical original drive).

In these instructions where restoring to stock they have mentioned using the original Lite-on FW from the “LiteOn_iXtreme_LT_v1.1” package. As I understand it, that FW is missing some info which would have been present on the original drives FW but it is generally not needed. Given I have 2 original drives can I skip this in anyway and work with the drives FW I have?

4) My understanding of the process is I need to dump/extract the firmware from my original drive (which will then have my DVD Key) and inject this into the original FW and write this to the new drive. **This is where I am looking for any guidance if possible given I have 2 original drives.** Can I not rip the full FW from drive 1 and just write that whole same thing back to the new drive 2? Or doing it this way (dummy.bin) am I losing some info which M$ may decide they want to ban me for! (Yeah paranoid but no I don’t trust these guys) which is made worse by the fact all I am trying to do is repair their faulty kit!

Again any help would be appreciated. It should be so simple but I have been overloaded with similar info but none has been in regard to a straight DVD swap using all original FW.

Oh.... before I forget:  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleeping.gif)

I have Win7 x64 (I know there were 64bit issues but I think from reading the forums these have now been overcome), CK3 Pro (rev D), CK Probe (not needed for the 80850C V1 drive I now understand!), and have downloaded Jungle Flasher V0.1.73 beta (108) but not installed. I have been looking at the PDF tutorial but I’m still a little lost as it generally references the iXtreme FW!

Many thanks.

If I had to shorten my post above I could just ask:

>> How do I insert just my DVD Key into the firmware of a new drive? (Not forgetting both old and new drives are the same model, original firmware, etc).

This is not called spoofing is it as the drives are the same, I just want to replace the DVD Key on the new drive with my old exisiting key! Ah i feel the need to get the soldering iron out so I can take the easy route, but I would prefer not to take that!

Thanks again to anyone who might be able to help.

If you do a mere inject only (no firmware with it, no spoofing involved), you're not going to get banned. The checksums coming off of the disc will match the hardware running it.

If you were to spoof a Samsung as a LiteOn, then you're in trouble.

Spoofing is simply taking one DVD rom and injecting the key data onto another. By all definitions of the word spoof, this isn't it ... but the functionality to inject a new dvd key resides with in the "manual spoof" button of JF.

On one of my machines, the Hitachi drive gave away. I replaced it with a LiteOn so I can utilize the iXtreme LT firmware. I spoofed the Hitachi key onto the drive, then applied iXtreme onto it. I didn't bother with the true spoof of making the LiteOn a Hitachi via dropdown menu.

The machine isn't going on Xbox Live and it would be banned within 10 minutes because of the spoof.

"Restoring to stock" is only needed when you're updating your drive. Instead of layering on iXtreme firmware after firmware, it's best that you start from scratch (or close to it) when you reflash.

For example:
I have the iXtreme 1.61 firmware, time to move to the LT 1.1. First step, restore to stock. Done. Next step, the actual 1.1.

If your drives are still stock, virgin, you can proceed with the LT 1.1 flash ... AFTER YOU MAKE A BACKUP / DUMP THE STOCK FIRMWARE. Very important here ... dump the drive and make sure to hold onto that .bin file. Make several copies and keep it safe (DVD & HDD). In the event of a bad flash, you'll need this to restore. Also, the original firmware will contain the precious DVD key.

1. Dump the drive. the OFW-LO.bin file will contain everything you need.
2. Dump the drive again. Using the spear to extract the OFW-LO.bin the first time might not have been right. Create another .bin file and compare it to the first. Do the dvd keys match?
3. Dump the drive again. One final check.
4. Exit JungleFlasher, powerdown the 360, change drives
5. When back in JF, head over to the "manual spoof" button, enter in your DVD key, and proceed.
6. Done.

Hi Accord,

Thanks for taking the time to reply with so much info, it is really helpful and appreciated.

Once I get my VIA SATA Card (hopefully tomorrow) I will give all this a go and report back. In some ways I guess I am lucky in that I do not plan erasing my faulty DVD drives firmware so can always refer back to it as long as it keeps working. (I will of course create multiple dumps to disk though).

The only final thing I want to just check, in your last points (which is what I am going to follow):

1. Dump the drive. the OFW-LO.bin file will contain everything you need.
2. Dump the drive again. Using the spear to extract the OFW-LO.bin the first time might not have been right. Create another .bin file and compare it to the first. Do the dvd keys match?

I have pretty much understood your steps 1 to 6 but just a few questions (sorry)

2. I read somewhere that you shouldnt use the spear with 83850C V1? I think it was on a site that was selling the spear. Is there any reason for this?

5. Manual Spoof ok I will probably figure how to work this better when I get to that part and see it all on screen as such. But what should the source and targets now be?! Sorry if this is a dumb ass question, but am I doing a full firmware write to the new drive which has my DVD Key manually spoofed into it? Or by using this Manual Spoof option is it providing me the option to just update this on the new DVD drives firmware?

Obviously you got me to save OFW-LO.bin which has my key and I guess this is my source and then I want to spoof my DVD Key into a Target firmware which is?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

God damn I feel stupid as everyone else seems ok at this lol

Mate, the jungleflasher's tutorial is very clear ona ll these questions. Even a noob like you , will find it quite easy to use it to do anything you want with your drive. Did you read it at all, so far? Please do.
