I bought a very nice HDMI pro system off a guy on EBay with previous LED mods, a talismoon fan and clear fan shroud, and modded Ring of Light for 90 bucks. Dude told me he had problems with a recurring e74 error, and was sick of reapplying the thermal compound everytime. Supposedly, besides the xclamp replacements, he had never tried overheating or reflowing.
The system booted to E74 as soon as I started it up. Tried a simple overheat, which let the xbox boot, but the opening xbox logo video was pixelated. I knew it wasn't fixed. Opened everything else up, and heatgunned the system. I've done a few successful heatguns before, and I wouldn't suggest it to a noob because I did blow a capacitor on my first try, unfortunately while my roommate cleaned his gun. The capacitor hit me in the shoulder and for a few seconds I though my roommate shot me.
After the heatgunning, I put everything back together, and went for a boot. Came up with the 0031 error, which from past experience, I know is overtightening of the GPU xclamp screws. I kept messing with this until the 0031 went away, and I got a 0002 error. This scared the shit out of me, because I know 0002 can be MOSFET related (this happened to my first system) and I dont have any replacements. However, with a little smarts, I messed with the CPU screws only, and found this to be the problem. Then I got the 0001 (wtf) error, and found out that some of the soldered LED wiring was touching the base of the metal case. I added 1 more washer to the bottom of each xclamp screw, and the xbox booted to green. Have been playing successfully for days.
Moral of this topic: 0031 is overtightened GPU screws, 0002 (can be) overtightened CPU screws, and 0001 (can be) interference with outside/modded power sources.
Hope this helps someone.
