Title: 2 Red Light ?
Post by: Atlasprime on September 10, 2009, 06:19:00 PM
Hey folks. Im getting the 2 red lights several minutes after turning the 360 on. I have performed an xclamp replacement using the correct amount of washers and screws and it was still happening. Artic silver is applied properly via credit card, nice thin layer, smooth. After a few minutes the system fan will slowly get faster and faster then finally the 2 rrod shows up... Not sure whats wrong.

To attempt to solve this issue, I took away the metal washers over the CPU. Still 2 rrod after 5 - 10 minutes or so.
I then went to the extreme and removed all washers from the top of the mobo, still 2 rrod.

Im positive the heatsink is making good contact with the cpu so im puzzled as to why it claims to be overheating.

Im using the new falcom/jasper cpu heatsink so im not sure how warm thats supposed to get, but it never seems to get hot at all... luke warm to warm at best. The Gpu feels about right to the touch.

Is there anything else I could be missing, or something else I could try?

I also tried fan modding, same thing happens at the same time.

Additionally, immediately after overheating, I power cycle the 360 quickly, expecting the 360 to overheat once again after it powers back on but it does not. It seems to take just as long for it to heat up.

This leads me to believe that the temp sensor on the 360 is dead or malfunctioning somehow and in fact no overheating is occuring....  Anyone agree with me on this hypoth. ?

I know this is a silly question but with all this disassembling, but did you remember to put your fan shroud back on, otherwise your fan is cooling your room and not the cpu.

If your CPU heatsink is only warm/lukewarm, then it is not making a good contact with the processor.  it's tricky to mount it without the washers, you have the make sure the processor is nice and flat.  An extremely common cause is over-tightening, especially if it is skewed.  You then have this rectangle generating heat, but all the pressure is on one corner and the heat can not dissipate quickly enough, eventually running you up to the 2 red lights; the fans getting faster and faster.

What i found is that if you remove the mobo, set it on a flat surface such as a table (balance it so that the mobo rests on the cpu heatsink and is straight) unscrew your 4 screws and pull the board straight up off the heatsink, you can then look at the die and if done correctly, you should be able to see a pattern of how spread the thermal paste was.  if one corner is more bald than the others, that means the heatsink was only putting pressure on that corner.

As all tuts will say, you only want these screws "fingernail tight"  I use a precision screwdriver, holding it with practically no grip, and wait until it starts to slip in my finger.  pretty loose.  afterwards, to make sure it's not too loose, make sure the heatsink will not easily move/slide.
