Title: 3 Red Lights
Post by: tbone_99 on June 24, 2009, 03:55:00 PM
Bought a RROD kit off ebay (x-clamp fix).
Followed the Instructions:
 - clean off paste, put on new paste
 - spring washer under board, 2 metal washers ontop of mobo
 - etc...

Found out that if I put 2washers over the mobo for the gpu, the Gpu and heat sink won't touch.  No matter  how tight the screws are...So i assume this board has had some serious warping??
Because of the no contact with the heat sink, the gpu overheats within seconds.
(2 washers between the mobo and cpu-heatsink seem to fit ok)

If i only put 1 waser per hole inbetween mobo/gpu-heatsink,contact between the 2 are good, so this is what currently doing.

However no matter how many times i overheat the gpu or cpu I can still never get it back to green.

I've also tightned & loosened screws.
I tried to see if I had an error code, but no video displays on tv...just the 3 red lights on the xbox.

Any other thoughts or suggestions...I'm stumped.

note: this is an old mobo, and has the extension gpu coolling fins

try to replace the washer  with thinner washer.
Total thickness of that two washer should not exceed 2 mm.
If more than 2 mm heat sink will not touch with GPU or CPU.
If your MOB does not back to green, that mean you MOB need to reball the chips. Espeacially GPU.
What is your MOB, did you see any epoxy, if you MOb had epoxy you need to pull off that from arround the chip.
That was originally prevent chip to donot goaway from MOB.
But since you chip was not good in BGA solder ball, that will prevent chip to attached back to MOB, by the means of heating or reflowing what ever you say.
But be carefull. Don't hit any thing else. It is very dangerous.

Thanks for quick reply nagamin.

My mobo is: X807681-001-F  Rev A

And around the chip caseing, on each side looks like a plastic mount for the chip... I assume this is the  epoxy your referring to?

Yes, it is. But usally you don't need to worry about CPU. Just concentrate on GPU. Most problem was cause of GPU.
