Title: 12mm M5 Bolts Ok With The Xclamp Fix?
Post by: gimpydingo on April 21, 2009, 10:30:00 AM
Actually the 8 mm might work - even with the 10 mm there is some extra length sticking out of the top. And the 10 mm fits perfect if you use the washers - I say don't bother with the washers - they seems to cause spacing issues.

Thanks - so why was 10mm given the magic no?....is it because of clearance??...ive seen someone use a 20mm bolt which bent the fins on the gpu heatsink because the thread was WAY TOO LONG.....im just wanting to make sure 12mm isnt going to hurt anything when using the method above (no washer on underside, 2 x 1mm washers before heatsink on topside)

Thanks

Couple of things. Are you asking about washers or screws. Everyone here thought screws, but rereading looks like washers. Also the washers truly don't matter and seems to cause more issues that they are worth. If you can find the right thickness you should be ok. I got rid of my washers and just tightened the screws by hand - which leveled the sinks.

Thanks - im definitely just talking about the screws....not the washers, i mean will their be any noticeable difference between 10mm and 12mm screws???....it won't screw into the gpu heatsink fins will it with that extra 2mm lenght???

I don't mean to be insulting or suggest I have any particular knowledge here ---is there some reason you couldn't just get the 12 mm... and if they don't tighten enough, put an extra washer in, under the bolt-head??

I guess it could make the bolt head hit the outer case & give you a fit problem ---but I'd bet it would work.

All this talk gents is somewhat pointless because if you are intending to use the Lawdawg method this is outdated and known to only be a short term fix. The best method is the Team Ultimate Hybrid Fix..

What you must realise is the most important thing in the repair is that the motherboard and in turn the heatsinks need to sit perfectly flat in the case. For a lasting fix you need to secure it in place flat otherwise the bending and flexing will cause the solder joints to go again.. Plus you need to use heat to reflow prior to the Xclamp fix
