Title: X Clamp Fix - Nylon Washers
Post by: Balls2420 on February 15, 2009, 10:38:00 AM
I fixed my xbox with e74 about 3 days ago and I found that the nylon washers were larger in width than the steel washers.  It's something to think about, either way your xbox really isn't at risk because there are no traces near the area the screws will be going through.  See my thread a few pages down regarding (Trouble Fixing e74 Error (1022)) and see what I did.

So I should go for the metal washers then?

If I heat the 360 by wrapping with a towel for 10 mins it will then work for a while before the artifacts start again so it seems to be related to the GPU.

stop doing the towel trick you are making it worse and risk fcking somethin else up in your 360.  next it doesnt matter if you use nylon or metal. essentially they play the same role. the nylons really are just to isolate the metal as to not short anything out,,,

One more thing, will the spring washers help reduce the over heating, if it doesn't do any harm then I can buy the kit with the 8 flat metal washers, 8 spring washers and 8 nylon washers including 8 phillips pan head bolts for less than £3.

I also plan to stick down credit card strips with double sided tape around the edges, but is this necessary for the CPU as well?

Now i am no expert here but i fixed 2 RRoDs over the weekend, never done it before, didnt even know what RRoD was before 2 weeks ago, gotta love YouTube haha, I got 2 kits of ebay
I got the ones with all metal washers, and the spring ones too and like i say i did mine and took me 3 hours
and only that long because i re- flowed them both. Trust me they have had some hammer ad still going strong.the issue is not between spring and nylon its between Nylon and normal metal ones,
the way i have read it is the spring ones are there for the cooling aspect
of things. and some sellers are saying the metal washers can short out the board.
as opposed to nylon which wont but will expand with the heat.saw a pic didnt look good anyway.
I will stay with the metal for now anyway and try the nylon when i buy another knackered one.
Key in whichever repair you do choose is THERMAL PASTE !!! simple as.

I don't recommend using the spring lock washers under your motherboard.   Ive gotten boards to fix in the past that people had used the spring washers against the board and they can easily dig into the copper on the motherboard and cause damage which then will have to be sanded down to allow any normal washers to sit flat.  Click Here to see pics of a board with damage from using spring washers against the motherboard.

Also the lockwashers are not even being used correctly in this application and serve no purpose. They also do nothing as far as cooling goes.....steel sucks at transfering heat, so how they could they help cooling?  According to the Nasa Fastener Design Manual, "The lockwasher serves as a spring while the bolt is being tightened. However, the washer is normally flat by the time the bolt is fully torqued. At this time it is equivalent to a solid flat washer, and its locking ability is nonexistent. In summary, a lockwasher of this type is useless for locking."  I wouldn't believe what the sellers on ebay are saying until I did some of my own research.

The nylon washers are not my favorite either for a couple reasons.  Almost every single one that I've measured is over 1mm thick.  Another thing is that they can change in thickness over time due to various factors such as heat/pressure making them possibly thinner which I've seen, or else in a humid environment they can slowly absorb moisture and possibly swell over time.  Click Here to read a report on "Relative Dimensional Change of Various Nylon Products Due to Moisture Absorption" that when referring to nylon products states "moisture absorption also affects change in part dimensions......the source of much concern to design engineers when contemplating material selection".

They are used more for things like tuning drums, where u need to be able to adjust the tightness easily, which also means they become loose earlier and need more readjusting.  In other words, nylon washers are designed specifically to decrease the resistance during tightening, since the friction coefficient is significantly lower between metal-nylon than metal-metal.  Nylon washers also start to get brittle over time and actually break right off....they always require frequent replacement, which wouldn't be practical for a "permanent" xbox fix.  The copper surrounds on the 360 are fine when used with all metal washers as long as they do not extend out far enough to short anything.  The outer diameter should be no larger than 10mm.

Plus nylon washers are very hard to find in my area and costs like 15times what a metal washer costs, so, metal it is on the last 50 RROD's I've done and had no problems with any of them.
