Title: Applying Arctic Silver Without Using Washers Or New Screws?

I just purchased an XBOX Elite and I'm looking to clean up the thermal paste and put on some Artic Silver 5. The guides I've read so far suggest new washers (both nylon and metal) and screws. Would it be enough to just clean up the heatsinks and apply AS5 using the stock parts?

the best thing you can do to prevent problems with the 360 is to improve the cooling. don't replace the xclamps with screws unless your xbox is getting the 3 red lights error code.
upgrading the thermal paste to AS5 will decrease the temperature by a few degrees. it would be far more effective to improve the airflow by upgrading the fans and/or doing the 12V or 7V fan mod. having your xbox well ventilated is a must too.

and if your xbox is still under warranty, don't open it at all. if it does break down, microsoft will repair it for you

Exactly - if I had the chance to do it over again, I would have just heat gunned my old system and replaced the thermal paste, and kept the X-Clamps. They do a better job than people give them credit for. The biggest flaw they have is the small surface area the "base" covers under the GPU, but it's still more than screws and washers will do.
