Title: Missing Ics Chip (ethernet)
Post by: toyopsp on August 13, 2008, 01:05:00 AM
Ok, I need some help here, I bought 3 xbox 360s from a friend of mine and all of those have the E 73 error code, when i opened up the consoles i found out that the ICS chip at the back of the ethernet port is missing!
So I believe this is what's causing the E 73 but I tried replacing the ICS from another unit and then the console now have the E 75 error, when i plug the HD, it goes back to E 73!  Please help me guys, are those ICS chips interchangable from one console to another?  Oh, and the ICS chip that i've got was from a 2006 360 and i put it on a 2007 one, am i doing aything wrong?  Please help, thanks

Hey.

I have an '06 console. If you want, I can give you the name and numbers that are on my eithernet chip so you can compare it to your '07 chip you have?

That looks like you got the little one. They either have a really large IC chip or the small one.

And E73 I don't think is an ethernet problem, someone on Xboxhacker got it because of a cracked ERAM heatspreader (the little die on the GPU)

If that's the problem is it easy for him to fix?

Haha, lol NO!
You will have to replace the CPU for that, I doubt that it is the CPU in your case...(and the NAND)

What is very likely is that the mainboard with the missing ethernet chip had the small 32 pin one, since you replaced it with the ICS one it is no wonder that you got E75 afterwards.
If you replace the small one with the ICS chip you will have to change some other components around it as well, wait for RDC to reply he will be able to tell you which ones...

Just hope that doesn't happen to my box.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

This doesnt mean a thing really, the E73 can always be related to the GPU traces that lead to the Southbridge, in general E73 is always a cold solder joint under the GPU or a cut trace to one of the components it leads to...
it can either be a cut/dead trace because the ERAM broke or the GPU flexed and has a cold solder joint now(If you flex the area under the GPU extremely the chip die cracks, this happened to me as well  once (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif))

Read CPU there, but it was actually the ERAM on the GPU...

thanks for the reply, but as you can see from the picture, there's a small square chip at the middle, isnt that an ICS?  Or is it just a part of the ICS that's been taken off?  Why would they do that anyway, geez, i believe my friend is a victim of some technician wannabee.  I have three of these consoles, is there a part number so that I can try to replace it? Where can I possibly buy an ICS like that?  So am I suppose to remove the ICS from 2006 console that I soldered to a 2007 one?

Well, I should have taken a look at the picture...

This square is actually a network chip, remove the ICS chip if you soldered it over the one...
Once you have got each mainboard like that( so that there is always either only this square chip or only the ICS chip(without a square chip below)), go get a heatgun and give the Southbridge -> GPU area a reflow, if this doesnt fix it It will be the Southbridge ethernet chip area so give this one a reflow as well.
I doubt that it is ethernet chip related at all though, if the Southbridge doesnt have a good connection to it or the chip isnt powered/shorted out it shows E75, if the chip is dead E76.
However E73 is a cold solder joint under the Southbridge/traces under GPU that lead to the Southbridge in 99% of the cases....

That smaller square chip is the BCM, same thing as the ICS really, just a different package and has different support components is all. The board is designed to use either of them (again with the proper support components) just depends on what they installed in it from the factory, it's supposed to look like that.

That BCM chip I still haven't found a source for, the ICS one yeah, but that BCM one you'll have to get from another 360 board if ya want to try replacing it. You'll also need a hot air rework setup to replace that thing, no way you'll get if off there with an iron without tearing something up, the bottom center of the IC is soldered to the ground plane, so ya must use hot air on a component like that to remove/install it.

Okay, now I'm getting it, so basically that small square chip is a BCM, then nothing is missing correct?  I have a console manufactured 2006-03-23 that has that small BCM and another console manufactured 2006-3-27 that has an ICS chip, I'm about to replace the BCM with an ICS chip but then I read your posts and thought that there's actually no need for me to do it anymore.

What I'll do now is to reflow, but should I heat gun it at the top or at the bottom, or both?  Does the same procedure for reflowing gpu/cpu/ram applicable?  Like 1 minute 300 C then 3 minutes 500 C or a different one?  I appreciate all the help, if I manage to pull this off, I'll let you guys know and of course I'll have myself 3 working xbox 360s, wow, that is so cool.  Here's hoping! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

By the way, can somebody please post a picture as to where should I be reflowing?  I'm afraid I might damage something else, thanks!

First reflow the area marked in red(southbridge->GPU) fixes E73
If this doesnt work reflow the Southbridge-> Ethernetchip area marked in blue fixes E75 and sometimes E73
Picture, what to heatgun...

Do the bottom first then after cooling down top...
Check out the last page of my heatgunnig tutorial for further information on the procedure

I reflowed like you said wilhelm but no luck, still error 73, anything else I can try?  I heat gunned the area you showed in the piture, first @ 300 degrees C for 1 minute then @ 500 degrees C for 3 minutes, let it cool down for about 10 minutes then did the same on top.. any other solutions?

you are supposed to do the bottom 1min preheat,  4 minutes on high.
The you wait for it to cool down for 45 minutes!(for 10 minutes they will still not be completely cool and you risk breaking them when you move the board around...)
Then isolate the top and do the same procedure for the top 1min preheat 4 minutes on high.
This worked for all 360s so far if you only do it for 3 minutes it wont reflow completely it will at first work and then break again after a couple of days...

oh.... Ok my bad.  Well, after 10 minutes the whole mobo was cool enough to touch and i thought that was enough, also may I ask how far am I suppose to hold the heat gun up from the board?  Thank you very much for your help, I'll reflow those mobo again and let you know what happens

And another question that's been bothering me, is it okay if i leave the heat sink of the cpu attached while I reflow the GPU -> Southbridge area?

Nope, heat will still go over there.
It will most likely not do any damage since you are not directing the air at it.
However even though the solder wont get hot enough to melt the heatsink will easily reach a temperature over a 100°C by the rest that goes over there...
The thermal compound can only be used up to a 100°C after that it looses its conductivity so you will have to reapply thermal compound anyway if you dont want to see the 2 red lights once you are done...

I did EXACLY what you told me to, but still  E 73 on both consoles... Perhaps the ethernet port itself is problem?  The next thing i will do is to reflow the southbridge -> ethernet chip area, if it still fails then I'll try to replace the ethernet port, what do you think?

I doubt the actual Ethernet connector is bad, unless it looks damaged in some way.

yeah i got that one prob too! i heat up the ICS cpu gpu and still gives me that 1 red light at bottom, start to thing buying a new one (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) i replace the thermal so many times cause of this and still doesnt work. so do u think its really the ics chip?

Use my heatgunning tutorial and focus on Southbridge and GPU, this will take care of it, the Southbridge is the silver chip with the xbox 360 logo near the sata connector...

The link to my tutorial is in my signature...

hello mate i have a few questions hope its ok i just readed your post about reflow for e73 problem can you answer please this questions?

1-  1 min in 300c  preheat botton... then 4 min 500c botton high   ?  wait 45min
2-  same think again at the top but isolate and do the same?

its right at 300c and then 500c?

and how long the gun from the mother board in cm ?

or you mean all the way in 300c low and high?

thanx for any answer mate
