Title: 360 That Microsoft Had Fixed Gets Rrod 0102. Glue On Cpu, Gpu Hinders
Post by: jdbkbuddy on August 12, 2008, 03:14:00 PM
I have a 360 that M$ had fixed. Has the GPU heatsink with heat pipe extended fins. The GPU and CPU has the epoxy that they applied after this fix.
I can not get this one to come out of its RROD 0102 code.
Has anyone repaired a 360 with the GLUE intact? Any tips on this?
Could the glue be keeping solder cracks from being joined?

Get a heatgun and heatgun the glue, and using an exacto knife it off of there. Don't heatgun for too long or you might reflow the GPU BGA and while using the knife move the chip.

Same here. No need to get rid of the glues. I just used the x-clamp fix for mine (the MKI method if you wonder) and it's been working fine since. I don't know what the hell that glue is supposed to do but it's not serving its purpose!!! If it was going to work then why all the RRoD for the second time??

Have fixed a couple of these, just reflow the whole CPU/GPU/RAM area (bottom and top) this fixes it for sure. The epoxy is quite nice because it is less risky while reflowing because you cant screw up the CPU/GPU so easily...

is there any advantages of having expoy around the gpu and cpu?
Yes, as I said before already, while reflowing there is not the risk that the CPU/GPU slides away...

No, I would not scrap the motherboard with much of anything, let alone an exacto knife.
The glue was added to M$ repairs for 3rrol. It was supposed to stabilize the CPU/GPU to the motherboard. Didn't work so well, I guess.
Anyway multiple re-flows do not work. Maybe the glue now hinders the CPU/GPU settling down on the balls.
Someone had opened the 360 before me and damaged the DVD Drive power cable and caused it to not power on. After replacing the power DVD power cable the power button would still not work, but eject and controller power-on worked. So, I am abandoning this repair.....

Thread Closed due to the poster confessing to using an air powered body saw to remove the glue. Not advisable
