First Picture of Xbox 360 'Opus' Motherboard
Posted by XanTium | July 29 14:25 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Electric Tuner over at the xbox-underground.net forums posted what seems to be the first picture of the Xbox360 'Opus' Motherboard.
The 'Opus' is a 'Falcon' generation motherboard designed to fit in a Xenon case. So that means a 90nm GPU, a 65nm CPU and no HDMI port. Microsoft will probably mostly use these boards to return to people suffering from the RRoD on Xenon boards.
That seems to match the with the picture below ... it has no HDMI port and while we cannot see the CPU/GPU chips it uses the new CPU heatsink and has less inductors next to the CPU which indicates it uses the 65nm chip.
Also notice how this Opus board has the HANA scaler/video chip (like the zephyr/falcon boards) ... so it's maybe not impossible to hack your own native HDMI port to these motherboards.

thats great news. i have a RRoD launch box that i was holding onto in hopes of getting an opus when i send it in for repair. (on the hopes that what i get back won't die any time soon,as the launch box is going to be out of its 3 year RRoD warranty pretty soon).

i'll probably fill out the repair order next week or the week. hopefully i'll get back an opus, and it ends up being as stable as my falcon box.

Hmm this makes no sense to me.
Why are they using the HANA chip if there is not even an HDMI port, this is pretty cheap.
All they did was create a new(old) AV plug...
If you get your hands on one check out if you can recover the HDMI port, the traces will most likely still be there....
Sounds quite cheap but since it is just a way to recycle the cases it is a "smart" move from a business point of view at least.

*EDIT*
LOL Just read the description, forget what I said here^^

I think they are suing the HANA chip because it's cheaper to produce one chip than two.

Good news, now i want to see it with a 65 nm GPU!

Great news! It's unfortunate this wasn't done right the first time though.

Cool, good to see that those with a RROD xenon aren't just getting f***** over and over again with equally unreliable boards.

Well.. the is no guarantee that these newer boards will live longer or fare better. We are hopeful though that with the improvements it will be better.

Falcons still suffer from the rrod, so I see no reason why these boards will be any different.

As we all know, 99% of 360 faults are GPU related, yet for some reason MS have failed to address this properly in any board revision.

Jasper will likely be the first reliable board.

There's Falcons with the RRoD? Interesting. I thought the lower power consumption + smaller dye + heatsink improvement took care of it. Perhaps they're still using low-grade solder...

I find it interesting that the Opus is toting a 90nm GPU and 65nm CPU. As long as we've been de-clamping boxes, you'd think they would've done it the other way around. Reminds me of an Aqua Teen episode..

Err: I said it was a bill. I thought you knew something I didn't.
Ignignokt: I DID know something I didn't...it just wasn't that.

What's the latest word on Jasper?  Any chance the 60 GB units will have Jasper?

Someone's already spotted some 60 GB units in the wild over here :

Wow, I'm sorry, I didn't realize what I had come across one of these boards a couple weeks ago. I noticed the
changes in the board and heatsink, but I didn't know it was newsworthy. It was sent back from a RROD repair, too.

The xbox I received back from MS repair center has this board. Just got it a week ago. Also had the unhackable dvd drive though.

I want that CPU heat sink.

My mods keep my GPU cool now (I removed the DVD rom) but that whippy launch box CPU gets warm and starts the fans a spinning.

You dont want that CPU heatsink because it is worse.
The only reason why they changed it is because it is cheaper and since the CPU runs cooler it doesnt have to be cooled as well as the 90nm ones...

I dont see the point in these. Wouldnt it have been cheaper to just replace with a falcon machine rather than design and build a new board.

The point of it not having an HDMI port is that way Microsoft can re-use old 360 cases.

That's really anyone's guess, but if Microsoft intends on installing Jasper motherboads in the 60 gig models, then I doubt it will be in all of them right off the bat. They will probably want to get rid of there old stock of Falcons first. Like when the Falcons first launched, hit and miss as far as whether or not you'd get one. Either way, with them beginning to hit shelves, I'm sure we'll know soon.

So what are they going to do with all of the older boards? Just dump them? This reminds me of the Xbox 1 MCP code and nvidia problem in the Xbox 1 days, surely it would cost them a lot of money again? Maybe this is the only way to rid of the problem. But the GPU is the problem right? It would of been better to make an Opus with Jasper hardware.

so since i have a dead motherboard with an old CPU heatsink (the one with the pipe) shall i use that instead of the new in my new falcon elite?

Some people have signed cases or decorative art (skins or whatnot) that they would like to keep.

So the only way that we can tell if its an Opus board or not without open up Xbox360 is from the CPU heatsink..  I get my return from MS about 2 weeks ago and its still has old CPU heatsink.

The key is to look at that power socket on the console.

MS can't have people randomly plugging in 175w power bricks into 203w motherboards, so they notched the original sockets with a little peg. The peg isn't there on the Falcon/Opus boards so both 175w and 203w bricks can be connected.

Pegged power socket + No HDMI = Xenon
Pegged power socket + HDMI = Zephyr
Pegless power socket + HDMI = Faclon
Pegless power socket + No HDMI = Opus

So all we need to do is wait for someone to examine the board and see if the pinouts for HDMI are still there.

So received my repaired xbox today. A pegged powerjack and wo hdmi which indicates a Xenon? Funny thing is that the letter I received said they "found an error with the machines motherboard"  (actually motherboard was checked as [X] in a list of possible failing parts)... and "the above mentioned part has been replaced"... . So most likely I have just gotten that dirty cpu pressure repair?

I just sent my Xenon 360 in because of the RRoD.  Assuming I get an Opus 360 back, will I still be able to use the 203W power supply with it?

yes you can, but cant use the 175w with an older system that used 203w
