2004 philips... then older samsung, then new samsung, then old phillips, then right on the bottom, any version of thomson.
Awwww, I've got a Tommy in an original ver 1.0.
Having said that it seems to play most stuff - balks at some CDRW's when asked to read too much off them.
I've just aquired and fixed with a brand new laser - a Phillips out of a (I think) a 1.1 - should I hold onto this instead ?

i got a phillips for my modded xbox....... but currently i bought a broken second xbox hoping to fix it and go on live.... and so far what i know is that everything works in the xbox except it cant read any disks so i was thinking of replacing the drive...........
just replace the laser its alot cheaper!
Samsung 605b or 616F/T is all I want
don't use dvd+r so no booktype problem for me on 605b
my order of pref is:
Sammy 605b
new philips
Sammy 605f
Thomson
old philips
yes I rate thomson better than old philips - think I had more success tweaking thomson than older philips lasers
one old philips died stone cold dead when I was testing what it was like on so-so dvd media - just rolled over n died - nothing would recognise again in it - didn't even open the thing to play with laser
haven't come across a Hitachi/LG so can't comment atm
605b's still seem to be fetching the most money on ebay
in the defense of the philips drives they might work much better on dvd+r as philips invented this format and support it more than the dvd-r format
wow lots of different opinions...............cant make up my mind..... LOLZ

I agree with Pizza. The older Samsungs (605B) are definately the best out there.

dont forget about a modded sammy 616t Mine reads ANYTHING!
Just making a list of everything I need to get. Found the Samsung model #'s ok but what is the model # of the new Philips drives?
new philips drive = VAD6035/21
it's not a bad drive but in no way better on dvd-r than the 605B like I said perhaps if you are using dvd+r then philips may be the best drives, These days dvd writers are so cheap you could change your dvd writer or format easier and cheaply than ya xbox drive
But I stand by my own list of drives
This is like the debate which is best bios, dash, chip/mod method, heck next we will ask which is best dvd writer and get all sorts of replies
Take a look at ebay prices to see what peeps will pay may indicate what peeps rate as the better drive - in UK aprox prices.....
Samsung 605B = £45
New philips & 605F = £35
Old philips & Thomson = £25
These are a rough aprox price but will show in general peeps will pay more for a 605B than a new philips - me included
