I prefer older xboxes (but not the 1.0 due to the small gpu fan that can fail) because you can TSOP flash them, and now, with no xbox live to connect to, this makes them as good as having a modchip. Xbox Linux will work better with a non-1.6 generally, and if you were so inclined you can upgrade your RAM to 128mb. There is also some question as to the quality of the RAM in a 1.6b, though in normal use I doubt anyone would notice anything was different.

i personaly like late 1.3 or early 1.4 xboxes.
the dvd drives are usualy about as good as they were going to get by then. they still have sammy ram. still using a decent video encoder chip. the tsop could be bigger but its big enough. easy solder points. cooling is good. very rareley find a foxlink psu in them "although you can" and you can upgrade the ram on them excetera..
still need to check/remove the clock cap. but all in all its prety much the best of all worlds.
i have no problems with 1.0's because i have a stock of gpu heat sinks that easily replace the 1.0 standard. the tsop is bigger but they tend to come with slightly shoddy dvd players, even with a new gpu heat synk they still run a bit hotter than the later revisions. can upgrade ram on them and generaly its a decent revizion although a bit hotter and dvd players can be bad revisions. tsop poiints are a pain but not a huge one. and the clock cap is still an issue..
1.6 xboxes im ok with sammy ram, need a lpc reuild so a bit more hassle when it coems to a mod chip. but nothing that cant easily be done in a few mins.
Decent clock cap. they dont seem to leak, but they do fail "dont mistake no leaking for not failing" usualy come with a really decent dvd player. but no way of upgrading the ram or tsop flashing
1.6b xboxes im always dissapointed to find. but the opnly reason for that is they have hyinx ram which cant really be used for upgrades on other earlier boxes. apart from that they are the same as a 1.6
