Title: Hard Drive Upgrade Without Desktop Or Mod-chipped Xbox?

Your best option is chimp. Google it. "chimp xbox"
Otherwise I'd look for a cheap PC in the local thrift store.

Thanks a lot guys! Chimp should suffice for the job. A couple questions:

The hard drive that I'm upgrading to should be IDE ATA right? Also, I remember when reading some tutorials that if your drive is over 137 or something like that GB then you have to do something special to make the xbox able to use all of that. Is that neccessary with Chimp, or can I install a 500GB hard drive with Chimp the same way that I'd install an 80GB hard drive with Chimp?

here u go i just did mine.. im in the exact situation as u, but i upgraded to a 2TB sata.. 1st find out what version ur xbox is.. i found that flashing the tsop was not nearly as hard as i had thought.. there are pics around that u can see from the motherboard which version u got.. if possible just solder 2 points on the mobo and ur golden.. that is if u can get the AID software to help u format the new drive.. but in short it is possible, i had a softmod for 5 yrs or more.. i used to have a pc and upgraded to a 320 gig using the pc method, now im living abroad, and no access to a pc, so i had to go this route, and im glad i did.. its just like having a mod chip pretty much.. but only can work on versions 1.0-1.5 xboxes.. read that post i was nervous as hell but i had some very helpful patient people help me out.. good luck

Yes, it should be IDE ATA ideally but SATA is possible with a suitable adapter. Plenty of info here about that if you look for it.

You're right, you can't just install a 500GB HDD in exactly the same way as an 80GB. Anything larger than 137GB needs additional partitioning. I've not used Chimp2618 on anything larger than 120GB myself but if you read that mini-tutorial from kodec I pointed out to you he was using it for a 500GB HDD too.

You should still look at the pinned topics/tutorials at the top of this very forum. The one entitled something like "The Art Of HDD upgrading with a Softmodded Xbox"  would likely prove helpful. smile.gif

Thank you fallenangel I believe I'm just about ready to undergo this. One final question though, I can't seem to find which molex y splitter I need. Is this one correct:

 http://www.monoprice.......=1&format=2

With 2 x 3.5 female and a 5.25 male?

The pictured molex splitter looks to me like its a FEMALE to 2xMALE which is correct but that means the description of it being 2F > 1M is wrong.

Also, for obvious reasons, the MALE and FEMALE connectors should be of the same size ie. 5.25. The MALE 3.5 plugs therefore appear to be wrong for this purpose too.

What you'd get if you ordered, who knows?

You need a FEMALE (5.25) to 2 x MALE (5.25) cable which the site you provided a link to does have: Molex > product ID 1313. But again there is a problem with the gender designation. The picture shows 1F 5.25 to 2M 5.25 (correct) but the description reverses the genders.

I'd guess the description was wrong and the picture was right but you'd need to check with them before ordering to be certain.

Not true. The point at which you need to use different tools is when any single partition is larger than 256GB. However, Chimp 2168 already supports large drives.

Yes sorry about that factual error, I did realise I'd made a mistake when I came back and read through my earlier post but by then it was too late to edit it. I left it without posting a later correction hoping nobody would notice smile.gif
