Title: Big Issue! Ms Dash Gone!
Post by: Vampir1c on February 02, 2020, 08:49:00 PM
Hello, I think I maybe the biggest idiot ever, well long story I had the xbox softmodded via Mech Assault save exploit, and then used the AID XBMC disc to start putting stuff into my xbox, then the xbox shut off in the middle of the MS dash install with the lights blinking yellow. I restarted it tried it again, this time formatted it again and tried installing the XBMC dash alone cause I didn't care about live, it shut off again. Then I read somewhere to install SID 5 with the AID disk which I did, but when it was removing softmod (dismount virtual C) and began installing SID 5 it turned off again.

Same issue, blinking yellow lights. So I opened it and found the CPU fan was jammed by something and I removed it, now I got the system back running but softmod is gone, and xbox boots up with a game only but without a game it says to a send xbox to service help with error code 13, rarely 14 comes up tho. I can't boot with my AID disc, and basically, there is no MS dash so I can't redo the save exploit with Mech Assault. I've ran across some stuff on the net saying if I have a game such as Halo 2 or later, I can reinstall the dash by going to live without a ethernet cable hooked into it.

I'd just like to know if I can do that, so I don't go out wasting my money tomorrow, and I'd put it towards a modchip, I know many will prefer me to get a chip, but I kinda want to do this asap and just letting me know if I can reinstall the MS Dash via Halo 2 + later method would work. Thank you!

Well, from what I have heard, Halo 2 should have had a late enough released date to UPDATE the dash to 5960, but I am not sure if it will install a complete dash if yours is missing. It is worth a shot, I guess.

If you want a sure fire way (depending on your soldering skill level) to fix your box, I would go with the modchip tho.

find a modded xbox and take your harddrive and install it in there and get slayers 2.7 autoinstaller and restore the dash using that software, put back your harddrive into your xbox and enjoy

Due to drive locking, sticking the HDD in a different system won't work. It'll boot to an error 06 and refuse to do anything else.

In regards to using a game disc to restore the missing dash, the answer is "maybe".

First off, don't unplug the console from mains power. If you do, then it'll quickly forget the time; this causes the system to refuse to boot game discs until it can load the MS dash again, meaning that you won't be able to use the Live updater to fix things. You'll know if this has happened because the console will start throwing error 16.

You may be able to use games older then Halo 2 to get the console booting again (though the newer the game, the better your odds). It all depends on whether the version on the disc is more up to date then the one installed on the console. If you already had the final dash installed (5960), and enough files are remaining that the dash updater code can detect this, then you won't be able to trigger an update regardless of what game you use.

On the other hand, if the previous dash got completely wiped out, then the chances of older games repairing it are pretty good.

If all else fails, it should still be possible to fix the console by hotswapping, using an EEPROM backup, or (of course) installing a modchip.

I don't know whether this will help but from the sound of it the Mechassault exploit save is still on the HDD. The problem sounds very like the one I had with my original pre-softmodded machine. Although I used  Splinter Cell rather than Mechassault I asume they work in the same way.

If the original Mechassault disc is (self) booted you should be able to select Run LInux and maybe get to the Evox install dash again.. It will depend on exactly what has gone wrong whether this works.

But if it does this will allow you to look at what you've got on the C and E drives, the config.xml to see what your MS dash .xbe uses and probably most importantly if the MS and Mod/C Drive Backups you should have done are still OK.

Whether its safe just to try reinstalling the softmod over the corrupt one I'll leave it up to the experts here to advise. But if you can get to the Evox install dash and your Backup files are OK I do think you will be able to sort this out without resorting to some of the more complex solutions suggested.

BTW have you tried starting the Xbox with the tray drawer open? Depending on the selected/default options of the original install that might even avoid having to run the Mechassault game save again.

Thanks Bomb Bloke, I will hunt down a copy of Halo 2 today, I also have a few games, but I'm not sure if there MS Dash updatable because unreal championship 2 doesnt do it, neither does mech assault. and Fallenangle, the save is no longer there and the run linux isn't there either because I stupidly reformatted the xbox hdd through the xbmc aid menu. Thank you for the suggestions everyone. I'll report with my status later.
